ErP/EuP ready PSU on 990FX Killer Mobo, is it needed???

Hello all who read this,

Just got the 990FX Killer and an AMD|8-CORE FX-8350 with a Thermaltake Smart M850W PSU. Triple checked all connections and cables, but when I plug it in, turn on the PSU, and press the power button, NOTHING happens. no fans, no lights, no buzzes. EXCEPT the light on the NIC port lights for a second then goes out when I turn on the PSU. I have heard mixed reports about ASRock mobo and the need for a ErP/EuP ready PSU and not having one causing the board to act DoA. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Just an fyi, I also got 2x8G|ADATA AX3U2400W8G11-DGv for my RAM

I have heard mixed reports about ASRock mobo and the need for a ErP/EuP ready PSU and not having one causing the board to act DoA.

That would be news to me. I've not seen anything even remotely saying this. Linkage to where this is posted?

ErP/EuP "Lot 6" are a feature set, not a requirement.

It was nothing but reviews from newegg and best buy on older products. At this point I'm thinking I just have a bad PSU. Going to swap it out for a corsair and see if that doesn't do the trick. If not, I'll be back and I'll remember to update my sig. Any advice you can give for the symptoms I gave?

Is it doing this while installed inside the case? Or is it doing this while assembled outside the case?

I posted the following information in another thread where the OP's updated system would not start:

Whenever I put together a computer system, I always place the motherboard on a cardboard box beside the computer case and power up and stress test the system. After I have verified that everything works, only then will I install everything in the computer case. If there is a problem when it's in the case, this probably means that there is a wire/cable problem or that there is a short circuit, possibly with the motherboard standoffs or at the rear I/O panel.

Never power up a motherboard with an anti-static bag or mat underneath the motherboard.

It's possible that your keyboard and/or mouse is causing the problem.
What type of cpu cooler are you using?
Is the cpu cooler installed correctly?

Is your power supply brand new?
Is the power supply's A.C. power cable securely plugged into the power supply?
Can you test with a different power supply that is known to be good?

You should try to boot with a minimal hardware setup, including only one memory module.
Disconnect all hardware, wires and cables that aren't required for your system to power on.

In another thread, the system wouldn't boot because of a faulty RESET switch and the system booted when the RESET cable was disconnected.
In a few other threads, the no-boot problem was caused by a problem with the front panel usb 3.0 cable connection to the motherboard.
You might need to test some of the installed hardware in another system.

It might be quicker and easier if you remove the motherboard from the case as your first step, it's up to you.

We don't know your experience level with building computer systems:

Always disconnect the power supply from the electrical outlet before you install or remove any hardware from your system and then press and hold the front panel's on/off switch for 10 - 20 seconds to discharge any residual power in your system.

I'd try a different PSU first, to save you the work of taking it all apart. OTOH, given the network interface LEDs light up, I'd say the power switch to the board is not connected correctly, or the switch is bad. New build, right? 1,000 things to get right in a build, like connecting those tiny wires to that tiny header, as you look back and forth between the manual and board. If I get them right on the first try, it's a miracle.

The ErP/EuP thing is completely false. As wardog said, ErP/EuP is a power saving feature that is enabled or not on a mother board. What and how does the ErP/EuP feature check the efficiency or ErP/EuP compliance of a PSU?

Well check this out, given your PSU is the one you included above, it is Erp Lot 6 compliant now:

What's that, an 80 Plus Bronze PSU is Erp Lot 6 approved? Erp seems rather low on the efficiency scale there, considering Silver, Gold, and Platinum PSU are common. No offense, just talking about Erp. erp...

Yet another example of many Newegg reviews not being worth the electrons that display them on a screen...

Thanks for the advice. I double checked all my cables and seating of video card and RAM. Going to swap out PSU on Monday and will go from there.

Is the power supply's EPS12V 8-pin power cable connected to the motherboard's ATX12V1 connector in the upper left rear corner, above the heatsink?

I know of one experienced builder who once forgot to connect this cable.....ME and I'm sure that I'm not the only one.

It never starts running from what I can tell. It makes no noise, the fan never comes on, and there are no lights on it from what I can see.

I'd at this point, knowing the PSU behaves that way, pull the MB/CPU/RAM out of the case, place it atop the BARE box the MB came in, and bench it there. Possibly a short that the PSU recognizes and shuts down on.
