  • H81M-ITX and a PCIe Sound Card: Bad Idea?

    Hi, all.

I wanted to purchase a sound card to use on my new H81M-ITX. The device would be PCIe x1. I am warned that installing a sound card could disable the onboard graphics of my Intel HD 4400.

    Is this possible?

    Thank you.

Really, disable the onboard graphics, why? Never heard that one before, I highly doubt it. I've never heard of anyone with that issue.

Allegedly, plugging a card (any card) into the PCIe slot will convince the motherboard that you are using a graphics card, even though you are not.

That is the theory, at least.

          "Allegedly"???

Links please to where you've read this. I cannot find one.

The BIOS has toggles for "Primary Graphic Adapter" along with toggles for audio.

As wardog said, there is a BIOS setting for choosing which video device you want to use, on-board (CPU) or a video card.

I assume since your H87M-ITX only has one PCI-E slot, and a PCI-E x 16 slot too, that is why the theory is the board will "think" a video card is installed when it really is a sound card, and automatically select it as the video source. Some much older, simpler boards might do that, but not a current board like yours.
