    ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3 BIOS update questions

    I have an ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3 motherboard and I've never updated the BIOS, so its current version is 1.20.

    1) There are currently 3 BIOS versions available (2.10, 2.20 and 2.30). Can I update from 1.20 right to 2.30 or it is needed to flash 2.10 before, then 2.20 and then 2.30?

    2) Should I reset the BIOS settings to default before flashing the new version?

    If you don't have a IVY BRIDGE CPU, then don't update.

      Read the http://forums.tweaktown.com/asrock/5...er-boards.html thread to find out why you shouldn't update your bios if you are using a Sandy Bridge cpu.

            Hello,

            i did this mistake and i have keyboard issues with USB now.

            Anyway to buy a chip with P1.30 on it?

              You can buy a pre-flashed bios chip for about $15 directly from ASRock.
              Send a PM to ASRock TSD - Emily and explain your problem in detail.
              You should also ask her if there is a way that you can flash backwards using P1.30 without bricking your motherboard.

              I've seen several instances where ASRock sent the owner a new chip for free and as I recall most of the time the owners were in Europe.
              Let us know how you make out.

                That is the question!

                We know that a correctly applied IVB processor BIOS update also updates the IME firmware. Will an earlier BIOS version change the IME firmware back to the SB version? Who knows?

                The irony may be that an incorrectly done IVB BIOS update, that does not change the IME firmware, might be able to accept a SB BIOS without ruining the board.

                OMG, I wish I understood the realities of this BIOS update!
