can't run 1866 RAM rated speed on ASRock X79 extreme 6GB

hello Gents,

can't run my RAM (Kingston Hyper X Genesis 1866Mhz) rated speed? I've got my board onto beta BIOS 2.31. Currently my RAM at 1666 timing set to default at 9-11-9-27 way below the rated speed of 1866.

current BIOS has no option for 1866, thou this the latest beta BIOS on ASR website as I don't want to mess around with non beta BIOS posted on ASR website.

Any help will be highly appreciated.

my rig specs:
motherboard - ASRock X79 Extreme 6 GB
motherboard BIOS - beta L 2.31
RAM - Kingston Hyper X Genesis 16 gigs (4 X 4) @1866Mhz Quad Channel
CPU - i7 3820
GPU - 2 X GTX770 (SLI)
OS - Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 (updated)

If you are using the 1.25x strap to overclock your CPU, then your RAM options become 1666MHz, 2000MHz etc. There is no longer an 1866MHz option. This is not an ASrock problem, but rather a feature of how the straps work on LGA2011 CPUs. The memory dividers are based off the bus speed. With bus speed of 100MHz you have RAM options of 1333MHz, 1600MHz, 1866MHz, 2133MHz etc. With higher straps your bus speed changes and so do your RAM speed options.

You can stick with 1666MHz or try to get your RAM running at the next speed, which is 2000MHz. The only way you can have 1866MHz is with the 1.00x strap which limits your CPU to 4.3GHz overclock.

thanks for the reply, yeah you are correct I've used 125 bus speed so no option to select 1866 but it do appear in XMP profile that I don't want to load.

currently running 4x4@ 2000 with 10-11-10-24 timings, so far no BSOD

2000 with 10-11-10-24 timing is pretty good. Hope it remains stable for you.

If you do have problems, a little more RAM voltage might help. You might also find you need a little more IMC/VCCSA voltage, but I don't think going past 1.2v would be wise.

More than 1.6v is unlikely to help with overclocking the RAM, but it is very likely to kill the SPD chip. If you do that, your pc won't boot until you replace the faulty RAM.
So no, not a good idea :P But hey, it's your RAM right?

Hi, It's an old thread so I hope I'll get an answer. I have the same problem, is it okey for me to try 2000 MHz with 9-9-9-27 timing?

I have: Crucial DDR3 BallistiX Elite 16GB KIT

Elite 16GB kit (8GBx2), 1866MHz, 1.5V, CL9-9-9-27
