  • B85M Pro4 Ram only works in slots 3 & 4

    Hello.

I just built a new systm:
    Motherboard: Asrock B85M Pro4
    CPU: Intel Core i5 4570
    Memory 8Gb kit GSkill Ares DDR3 1600

Problem is, the RAM will not work in slots A1 or A2.
It will work only in slots B1 & B2 , which then means it is only working in single channel mode.

Now I don't know whether this is a motherboard problem or incompatible RAM.
The Ram is not listed in the support list in that kit (2 x 4Gb) but it is listed as a 32gb kit (4 x 8Gb).

I really don't know where to start troubleshooting this. Motherboard problem, bad memory slots, or do I have to set some manual timings or something in BIOS?

    Thanks for any help.

    Hi,
check all RAM slots with only 1 memory module.
If one channel is not working, even with 1 module - this usually means that the motherboard is damaged -> check CPU socket for bent pins -> not help -> check mobo with other CPU.
Sorry for my English, its not my native language.

Thanks - Im thinking more & more its a motherboard problem. I tried a single stick at a time, but none worked in those 2 sockets, but worked in the B1 & B2 sockets.
I took it all aprt again, & in the CPU socket on the motherboard I can see a darkish looking patch compared to the rest of it. When I take a magnifier to it I can see some pins protruding much further than others. I wrapped some plastic around my finger & touched the pins ever so gently & you could clearly feel that there were 3 or 4 pins sticking up way higher than all the others.

I gather this then might be the problem?

Thanks so much for trying to help me.

Yes, most likely it is the problem.
Before RMA, you can try to clean burned pins and check again.

"darkish" could mean burned. Can be caused by extreme overclocking (it is impossible in your case) or installing cpu to socket with bent pins -> bad contact or short circuit.
Some people received new/"refurbished" motherboards with bent pins.

          Re: B85M Pro4 Ram only works in slots 3 & 4 [SOLVED]

          Solved: bent pins on motherboard.
          Everything is fine now.
