• Will ram work proporly? its not in the aproved "memory support list"

Hi i have just orderd a buch of hardware to build a new gaming computer.

I just noticed that the ram i orderd is not in the supported ram list. This ram is one of the most common on the market and i wounder will it work? anyone who have this mobo with these rams who can confirm it will work?

Here is the ram i will use: Corsair Vengeance Low Profile 8GB DDR3 PC3-12800 1600MHz (2x4GB)

(CML8GX3M2A1600C9)

I will not OC the computer, just run it as it is.

Parts that i have orderd.
Antec Kuhler H2O 620
Antec P280
ASRock Z77 Extreme4
Corsair PowerSupply (PSU) GS 600W Gaming Series 80 Plus
Corsair Vengeance Low Profile 8GB DDR3 PC3-12800 1600MHz (CML8GX3M2A1600C9) (2x4GB)

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Engelsk (64-bit) (OEM) (DVD)
Samsung Intern SSD 128GB 830 SATA6G Basic Kit (SSD) (MZ-7PC128B/WW )
Sapphire Radeon HD7870 2GB GHz Edition (11199-00-20G) - PCI-E

I know this is a noob question, but if i am lucky someone have done the stupid thing of ordring first and then lookup if it will work

Welcome to the forum.
A web search using: CML8GX3M2A1600C9 z77 extreme4 should help answer your question.
Keep in mind that motherboard manufacturers can only test a small sample of all the current memory kits with each motherboard.
I've seen several cases where some memory kits had issues with overclocking with some brands or models of motherboards.
You probably won't have issues with using a 2x4GB kit, but using 8GB memory modules might be a problem.
The odds are in your favor when you buy current memory kits, and older memory kits might have some "issues".
Let us know how your memory works out.

Hey, I don't think I can help too much but I can tell you one thing. I did the same thing...I have the same motherboard as you and I didn't look at the supported memory page before I bought my G.SKILL Sniper Series SDRAM DDR3 2133. It works perfectly well with my mobo, but it just doesn't run at 2133, only at 1600. I would just like to know if there is some way of me boosting the speed up to 2133, but I assume there isn't.

try emailing asrock and ask for them to test, send you a bios to support 2133mhz with the gskill, most likely its bios thats holding you back, makesure you use latest available bios if you arnt already

it should tell you what version bios you have somewhere in the bios pages/info screen itself,at start up,and for the latest version look on asrock wensite and type in your motherboard model and look for newest bios release

Thanks all for your replys, i will post here when the build is finished. Most likely as wazza300 wrote it will work just fine. This is the first time i use a ASRock mobo so it will be intresting. Normaly i go the safe way and use asus witch im used too.

Greetings all.

in addition to above post my 2 cents
Normally the MB will detect SPD and set your RAM to 1333. You have to set the RAM to 1600 and OC the CPU a bit. I suppose your memory is rated at 1.50 v stock. You have to bump up the RAM voltage a bit if it fails to work at 1.5 V,1600 Mhz.

New memory always starts at the default speed, which should be 1600 on a Z77 Ex4. To get the highest speed, you must set it either manually, or using the XMP setting in the UEFI.

If you use the XMP setting, the voltage should be set for you. On a Z77 board, the CPU and RAM speeds are separate settings, but they do share the BCLK. Standard BCLK is 100MHz, and cannot be changed much at all, don't bother changing it unless you are a experienced over clocker. It won't go above 105MHz without a BSOD anyway. This board does not let you adjust the memory multiplier directly, you can only select speeds, but the standard ones are all there, up to 2800 or so.

Be careful changing RAM voltage on any newer Intel CPU board, that can damage the memory controller on the CPU. The lower the voltage the better, IMO. I think the max memory voltage on an IB CPU/board is 1.5V, if not it is 1.65V. I use the new Samsung memory, which I can run at 2000 with 1.35V. The XMP data shows 1.28V!

When I booted my EX6 first time with 1600,16GB G-skill RAM it defaulted to 1333 Mhz with BIOS 1.70 and UEFI default.
I tried after upgrading to BIOS 1.90 which still sets the RAM to 1333 when loaded with UEFI default.

Re: Will ram work proporly? its not in the aproved "memory support list"

The 1333 or 1600 speed depends on the default SPD data of the memory. I should have said 1333 or 1600 as the default speed, for higher performance memory. Sandy Bridge CPUs are rated by Intel for 1066 - 1333 speed memory, and Ivy Bridge moved to 1333 - 1600. So with memory that will work with both of those CPUs/platforms, the default SPD data is usually set to 1333 for compatibility. The Intel memory spec is conservative, since memory is now sold with speeds up to 3000.

Memory manufactures set the default SPD data to what they think will be safe values when their memory is used in different, unpredictable platforms. This is also done to accommodate users that don't know exactly what they have purchased. The goal is for the memory to work for any user. To run it at its potential speed, you must know what you are doing, by enabling XMP or setting the memory settings yourself. It's not an error or problem that your memory speed defaults to a lower value than expected, it works that way for all these reasons.

Intel platforms require you to enable XMP in order to set memory to their highest specified speed. You can do it manually too. With the recent increase in memory speeds and its compatibility with SB and IB platforms (2133 - 2800+ settings available in the UEFI), we may see the default SPD data speed set at 1600 or above.
