  • External USB drives delayed recognition [Asrock Pro3 Gen3]

    Hi,

    As the title says,

The external self-powered USB drives are both recognized only after about one minute after entering desktop. I work from at least one of those so the wait is too long.
It's a brand new computer running Win7 32bit (fully updated), Pro3 Gen3 mobo (default Bios), and latest drivers. Did not have this problem on my old computer running WinXP.
Any ideas as to what might cause this and how to solve it?

    Thanks a lot!

I still haven't found a solution to this.

    Anyone any idea at all?

It could be your A/V solution...Try disabling your anti-virus from auto starting and see if the delay in recognizing the USB drives goes away...

Re: External USB drives delayed recognition [Asrock Pro3 Gen3]

Thanks but it's not that. Actually the plot has thickened:

Not only the hard drives are delayed but also the WLAN USB adapter. When I go to ''Device Manager'' right after entering desktop and expand both ''Disk drives'' and ''Network adapters'' the external drives and WLAN adapter get active only after about one minute. Something is definitely going on with USB devices. I already disabled all types of sleep and energy savers in ''Universal Serial Bus Controllers'' but still nothing

        Wth?

Edit: my USB mouse (Logitech G400) on the other hand is immediately recognized. Maybe because of the Logitech Gaming Software.. ?

Try several tests where you boot with your your external drives disconnected, and with only one drive connected.
Once you get to the desktop connect one drive at a time and see how long it takes to get recognized in My Computer.

Which usb ports are each drive connected to?
Are you using a usb hub?

Re: External USB drives delayed recognition [Asrock Pro3 Gen3]

            And that's why you're called profJim ^^

I booted without external drives and the problem seems to revolve around the 250GB drive. When this one is not connected the other external drive is immediately recognized as is the WLAN adapter. It does not matter on which mainboard connection (no hub) I put them the outcome remains the same. I formatted the 250GB drive with Western Digital Quick Format hoping this would help but it didn't. So, this drive seems to be faulty somehow. Still, it works once it is recognized. Suggestions here?

Thanks for your spot-on help. Did not figure these simple steps myself (PC specs done did)

              Your welcome.
After you've been doing troubleshooting for a while, you quickly learn to try and isolate where the problem might be.
Sometimes it's as simple as a bad cable or connection, and sometimes there is an incompatibility with certain hardware combinations.

It's possible that the 250GB external drive might work perfectly when connected to a different system.
Your best bet is to look at the WDC tech forums and FAQs WD - Service & Support Home and register if you want to discuss the issue with them.

              Welcome to the forum.
Next time try to give us a harder problem to solve.

You're welcome, glad to help out, but are you implying that I'm a half-fast trouble-shooter?
I didn't see your post until earlier today, besides, good things come to those who wait.

It would be interesting to see if your WD 250GB external usb drive works OK in another system, but this wouldn't help solve your problem.
Run the WD Diagnostics software to see if any problems are detected.

Did you test using each of the usb ports on the back I/O panel? USB01? USB45? USB23 (3.0)? Using different usb mobo headers?
Are you using the Etron USB 3.0 driver ver:0.104? There might be a newer 3.0 driver available.
I'm not familiar with ASRock XFast USB and how this might affect your external usb drives.

After you've booted to the desktop, how long does it take to recognize the WD 250GB drive after you plug it in?
It might help if you have already performed these tests before contacting WD tech support.

Let us know the results and the final resolution.

Just noticed this thread through a Google search ;) Forgot about the help I've gotten so fast so sorry about that.

For the sake of completeness posting back to say that I could not solve the problem. I ended up replacing the usb drives. Booyaa! problem gone.
