Re: Best DX11 Video Card under $100?

I finally paid for a new PowerColor ATI Radeon HD6850 1 GB DDR5 on Ebay.

Not the safest bet since it's PCI-Express 2.1 and I have never tried this brand before, but the price is quite reasonable (125 USD).

If it doesn't work I will resell it anyway.

Will let you guys know when it ships. Probably 3 weeks or so. Fingers crossed.

Three weeks ?? where's it coming from, china ?? haha............I think you made a good decision, hopefully it works well in your system.............the 6850's have been getting a lot of "best buy for the bucks" kudos lately online...........so, i just got one too, yesterday, installed it last nite.....kinda sucks that the end of the card just touches the p55 chipset heatsink on my gigabyte motherboard, when i put the card in the first(x16) slot...i was gonna use the second (x8) slot, where the card touches nothing, but, i thought it might not work as fast, not sure?.....so far, no problems with heat or anything, but, will keep an eye on it......xfx makes the card i bought, decent manufacturer, i think...not sure of powercolor............i think after rebate it was 139, at microcenter, in boston.

Hey, the card just came but it didn't include the 6-pin power supply cable. And the motherboard doesn't seem to have a connector for it. Please take a look at the pictures.

you can buy an adaptor, ive had to do this today with a 5770 card as the psu didnt have 6pin connector so i used one of these

Does it have a 6-pin pci-e power cable?

@profJim Nope it doesn't have a 6-pin cable, or at least I don't see it.

                      Xtech, 600 W - 20+4, 4 pins for processor, 3 molex connectors, 1 sata connector, disk connector.

Re: Best DX11 Video Card under $100?

This probably means that your new psu is based on a much older design that pre-dates pci-e video cards.
You might be able to get by with an adapter like Wazza linked to, but your power supply wires look awfully thin.

Hopefully your new psu can deliver at least 450 real watts continuously and at higher temperatures.
If it can, your psu should be able to safely put out up to about 325 watts to your system and video card for extended gaming sessions without problems.

I don't mean to be an alarmist, but there are way too many sub-standard power supplies sold all over the world.
Many years ago I lucked out when I found out that my name brand 420 watt psu was actually a pretty good 340 watt psu that would shut itself down due to the OCP (over current protection) feature if it tried to put out more power. The real cheapy power supplies will sometimes burn out when they self destruct by trying to exceed their real limits.

To this day, I refuse to buy any Thermaltake products.
Fool me once, shame on you,
fool me twice, shame on me.
                        (end of my rant)

Looks like I need a 2 Way 4 pin PSU Power Splitter molex and the 6 PIN PCI-E TO MOLEX in order to have my second sata disk working.

Do not overclock your 6850 video card!!
I'm not a gambler, but looking closely at your psu label and how few connectors your "600 watt" psu has, I'd be willing to bet that your psu only has a total capacity of about 250 watts maximum.

I hope that I'm wrong, but I have a really bad gut feeling about your new power supply.

The link is down right now, but read the full Thermaltake Purepower 430W NP Power Supply Review | Hardware Secrets review, as this old psu has more connectors and can only put out ~350 watts maximum before it shuts down. From the review:If their site is still down, you can read this pdf copy of the review: Thermaltake Purepower 430 W NP Review [HardwareSecrets].pdf

                              Agree with Prof Jim,

I have an el cheapo $25 480 w (400w combined)rated psu , which is still working but its power output is v low .try a pcie card as powerfull as the 6850 and playing bf3 on it and even if it would fire up Id be waiting for the small of burning components.

Your psu is as PJ says based on the old tech, you can tell by the heavy wattage rating for 3.3v and 5v.
                              Its also a $20 psu

                              Xtech P4 Power Supply 600w (20+4pin) w/Sata

or less Xtech P4 Power Supply 600w (20+4 Pin) w/SATA - $1,609.30 : Uneek Computer, Quality and Reliability since 1994

A lot of the web listings seem to be from Jamaica,(thats 1,609 Jamaican dollars like $14 US)no idea why.

Ideally if going to use an adapter for a 6 pin gx card input you should have 2 seperate connectors from 2 different molex leads coming into it.Does your psu have 2 molex leads or do all 3 connectors come off one lead?

Im not saying it wont work but I too would be suspicious of the 12v 36A rating.
