  • Asrock Z68 crash due to high temperature of topside videocard ?

    Hi there all.

I've got an interesting problem. I think it has to do with high temperature radiation from the videocard, radiating its heat on some caps on the Z68 Extreme 4 motherboard.

I had several bleu screens of death, after a couple of months using this awesome board. The bleu screens turned into random crashes, with a complete shutdown of the PC. After restarting, had to go to the BIOS to fix the boot order. Tried even installing UBUNTU only with DVDrom connected. didn't work. Change all of my 4 2GB Kingston rams, change CPU cooler, Change videocard, disconnected every drive, tried only USB.

    Nothing worked.

Only thing was, when PC was cooled down completely i could use it for 15 min. on 2D apps, and 3 minutes in 3d Gaming.
When touching the TOP side of the videocard i noticed heat Noticed that some caps on the mobo were also warm/hot.
Placed a fan and a piece of paper between the caps and the vid-card, so heat could not easily get to the caps. That offered a timely solution, could work in 2d for more than an hour, and 3d gaming at least 30 minutes !

But problem stays, maybe the north/southbridge underneath the vidcard is getting to warm as well.

In the beginning i had no problems, but board is 7 months old now, maybe the constant heat has taking its toll now .

Did wrote to the Asrock techs, and awaiting their answer.
Anyone here has the same problem, or even a solution.

    My specs :
    1. Asrock Z68 Extreme 4, aangeschaft in mei 2011 met BIOS P 1.70
    2. Zalman ZM600-HP power supply
    3. Zalman Z9 plus Case ( Lots of FANS )
    4. Gigabyte GTX 460 videocard
    5. PNY 9800GTX ( spare videocard )
    6. 4 x 2 HyperX kingston
    7. OCZ agility 3 SSD 60 GB
    8. Harddisk WD10ealx 1,0TB
    9. Harddisk Seagate 400gb
    10. dvd burner
    11. Intel core i7 2600K
    12. Scythe Mugen 1 cooler incl 2 fans
    13. Deep cooler 21PWM budget cpu cooler. ( spare )
    14. Saitek Cyborg R.A.T. 7 mouse

And yes, i have warranty, but would like to try this first.

    Thanx, A.

whats underneath the videocard on the mb where the cardboard is? should there be a mb heatsink there? looked at coretemps for your graphic card and mb using hwmonitor and gpu-z programs? could be nb area of mb getting hot? you can also buy some stick on heatsinks for your graphic cards ram,it might help dissipate the heat

Re: Asrock Z68 crash due to high temperature of topside videocard ?

The ram of the vidcard is not the issue, i tried another one , and had the same problems.

But indeed maybe the heatsink under the V8 thing of the mobo is getting to hot to
But the piece of paper on top is working a bit, and its not covering de V8 heatsink.

I tried to see what the temps were, but when the computer shuts down, there hard to read :).
Via the temp. reader in my case, topside of the vidcard is a whopping 40 degrees celsius. between the caps 39......
It feels warm, but after reading those values.........

But i'll have another try at it.

      Thanks for the input !

Re: Asrock Z68 crash due to high temperature of topside videocard ?

try removing mb battery for 30mins,then load optimized defaults in the bios and re enter any bios/oc settings, could be voltage/stability issue its crashing out not a temp issue

make a note of what dram bus voltage and imc voltage your using in bios

Check out http://forums.tweaktown.com/video-ca...g-results.html, posts #81, #83, #85, #110 and #112 where I have a 92mm cooling fan and fan shroud to cool both video cards.

A similar solution might help with cooling your video card and chipset.
