Asrock Z68 Pro3 .. no joy with ubuntu/kubuntu

I've updated the BIOS to 1.60 (latest from the Asrock site).

I get corrupted graphics (and a seeming hang.. can't see so can't tell) when trying to install Ubuntu/Kubuntu 11.10... have tried from USB and from DVD.

EDIT: this in 64-bit mode
EDIT2: also failed 32-bit mode: here's a pic:
