  • ASRock Z68 Extreme4 VGA output, New build with no video card

I just built a new desktop computer using an ASRock Z68 Extreme4 motherboard + Intel Core i5 2500K. I don't have the Radeon video card I want (yet), since I assumed I could use the onboard GPU from the 2500k in the meantime.

I also don't have my LCD monitor right now, since it's being moved from Canada to USA with the rest of my belongings. That said, I thought I would use my Best Buy Dynex LCD TV as a temporary monitor.

Thing is, when I plug in the monitor using either D-Sub (vga) or HDMI, my Dynex TV just reports "no signal". I did read in the manual that to use the VGA outputs, I would need to install the drivers from the included CD with the motherboard?

Would plugging the computer into an actual LCD monitor work? Do I need to use a DVI cable?

I sure hope that in order to use the onboard GPU of the CPU and motherboard, I don't first need to install an actual graphics card just to get to the bios or install drivers.

PS: this is a fine week for tech support to be off too... hehe ;)

Use a DVI Cable for the onboard graphics, if you are not a gamer you do not need anything else.

Make sure you have memory installed when first turning on your computer. Memory is required for the internal video to work, so without it, you won't be able to even see anything to enter the BIOS!

B.T.W., I agree with the previous poster about not needing a separate video card for most applications. I'm using my AsRock Z68 PRO3-M build as a Photoshop computer. The built-in Intel 3000 graphics works just fine!!!

Turns out it wasn't posting after all... loose cable. Sheesh... story of my life... Last build (years and years ago) it was a loose ribbon cable into the back of a disk drive that caused the mb not to post...

          Everything works fine.

Yeah, the HD3000 graphics are great... even in some 3D games... I'm a gamer tho, so I still look forward to getting my XFX Radeon 6870 (Black) card in the near future... :)

I have a brand new VisionTek 900339 Radeon HD 6850 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card with Eyefinity and I did not install it. No better with with it or without it. The Intel Graphics on the card are as good as this 200USD video card.

You do need a dedicated graphic card if you plan on gaming, esp at high resolutions,Intel graphics are good for movie watching/web browsing and playing some games but not all and not on the highest settings plus Intel graphics WON'T support dx11,don't rule out the cheaper just as quick 5870 card too

You need to get your eyes checked then bro... I've tried out almost all my games on Steam just to see how they run using the Intel HD3000 graphics and I can guarantee you the dedicated vid card like a 6850 is going to be way better. The onboard graphics aren't even quite as good as my laptops Nvidia Geforce Go 7900GS (5 years old?)

It certainly isn't comparable to a $200 USD card, but more like a $50 to $70 vid card...

I mean, just look at any Youtube video of a dedicated vid card running Crysis 2 and you'll see the difference.

I guess it's all personal preference tho...

the ONLY game that did run a bit better than my 7900GS was Transformers The War For Cybertron... everything else, I still have to run at lower quality settings to be playable... With my 6870 Radeon, I fully expect to be able to max out every setting...

I have to admit I am not an avid gamer but I alway liked to have a decent video card in any of my builds, I usually build about 4 PCs a year, depending on the technology changes, this year was a P67, a Z68, and a LGA 1366 build. I only use Corsair Cases ( Obsidian) 650D or 800D and try to use the best components that I can afford. I usually keep a build from 3 to months depending on who wants to buy it. The Z-68 build has been tried by most of my sons gaming friends and they all say " its not as great as an expensive video card but it will do. Makes the Case the look nice and clean also.

What I've noticed so far is that any game built on the Unreal engine runs really well with the HD3000 Intel graphics...

Yup you are correct, I asked my son, he is not a little kid by the way , he is 20 and in college LOL, and he plays all sorts of games and he uses a 990X build with a MSI Twin Frozr 11 Graphics and he said that you can only play some games with the Intel Graphics the more intem=nsive games need a discrete graphics card for sure.
