    N68C-S UCC Slow to start when IDE drive attached

    I have an N68C-S UCC. BIOS Ver 1.4
    AMD Athlon X2 5400+ - ADO5400IAA5DO
    2x 2gb pc2 5300 cl5 240 pin dimm Kingston KVR667d2n5/2g

    I have 2 500 Gig SATA drives (in IDE mode)
    One IDE DVDR/W (master)
    One 340 gig ATA133 drive (slave)

    The board takes over a minute to boot (either to BIOS setup, F11 Boot menu or to OO/S)
    Once it starts, it all works fine.

    If I disconnect the ATA HDD, it boots really quick.

    Any ideas?

    I see lots of questons on here and very few answers.

    Is that always the case here?

      Try setting your IDE HDD to master and your optical drive to slave by using the appropriate jumper pins on each device and make sure that the master device is connected using the IDE cable connector farthest away from the mobo connection.

      Which of your hard drives is your normal boot drive and which port number is it connected to?
      Is your optical drive in the boot order priority list in your bios?

      Sorry that you had to wait 5 days for a reply, most forum members don't reply unless that have some suggestions to offer. I normally hang out in the Gigabyte and Video Card forums but saw your post when using the "What's New" forum search.

        Thanks for that.

        The optical drive is low down in the boot sequence.

        1st and 2nd boot devices are SATA drives. The IDE drive is not set as a boot device.

        Interesting idea regarding the length of connector cable. I didn't know this had any effect.

        I will play this evening.

        My point regarding non-replies was not really specific to my question. It was a general observation. ASRock point to this forum and I thought that some of their techs would come on here to answer questions but it seems to me that very few questions get an answer.

        Anyway, thanks for the help and I will report back when I've had a tinker.

          It's official. I'm an idiot.

          BOTH drives were set as master.

          Make the HDD master, optical to slave and the boot happens so fast I've not got time to hit the Del key to get into BIOS settings.

            It's the simple things that mess things up.
            You're not an idiot, the first time we all get a free pass....repeating the mistake is another matter entirely ;)
