Silly Newbie Question

For the first time in a long time I'm rebuilding a computer.....question regarding connection of power supply is an Antec Neo H-500 (old Alienware case) and the new motherboard is a ASRock 890GX Extreme 4....power supply has both 24 pin and 4 pin connectors....and board has sockets for both (actually 1x24 and 1x8 that can be used with a 4-pin)...question is are they both to be connected? Naturally the layout of the two boards is completely different so if they are I'll have to break open the power cable bundle and separate the two feeds.

It works with 24 (ATX) + 4 (ATX 12V) pin connectors. It works even with 20 pin and 4 pin connectors.

Yes, you connect the 24 pin to the 24 pin connector and then you need a cable that has 4-pin (12V = yellow/black) connector for the 8 pin mobo connector.

We must have 2 different manuals....in my manual power connection instructions are found on pages 30 and 31...this m'board allows use of 4-pin only....maybe I'll just get a power supply...this one is at least 6-years old and hasn't been powered up in at least 3 years.

But thanks for the advice...both need to be connected.

I'm using the online one and page 12 has the layout of the mobo. Pages 35/36 have closer descriptions of connectors.

You can use this motherboard even with 20 pin and one 4 pin connector.
