  • Random freeze: x58 extreme / cpu problem?

    Hey guys

I have a new machine with the following hardware:

    ASRock X58 Extreme
    Core i7 950 Box
    HIS Radeon HD 5870
    3x2GB PC3-12800 mushkin redline 998805

Installed windows 7 2 weeks ago and had the problem that after playing games or watching movies for 30-45 min the pc hangs. No sound, screen freezes and I can only hard reboot it.

I first tought that it is a problem with the graphics card but after changing it the same problem occured again. I can not change the cpu cause I have no 1366 here.

I disconnected all drives, removed all usb peripherals except the keyboard... now I have the problem that after 10 secs even the BIOS freezes. after a jumper reset it works for aprox. 5 min and freezes again.

I dont know what exactly the problem is, there was no error in eventviewer and I have absolutely no idea what to do now.

All temperatures are normal, no special bios settings, everything on auto.

    Any ideas?

post your qpi/vtt and dram voltages, would be better to disable xmp and manually set ram timing/speed ect

are you using latest mb bios?

Re: Random freeze: x58 extreme / cpu problem?

I dont know exactly where these values are.. :/

      23-6.400GT - 3200MHz - DDR3_1600 / QPI: Auto
is that what you are looking for?

and how do I disable xmp? I have only the choice between Auto and Profile 1( 6-8-6-24 / 1.65V)

      my ram: 998805 - 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800 6-8-6-24 Redline (Triple Kit)

so profile 1 would be correct, right? tested that already, same result..

P2.4 is my bios version, upgrade to 2.6? What if it freezes during upgrade?

Re: Random freeze: x58 extreme / cpu problem?

i dont know the software for that mb but DONT update the bios from within windows, update it from the bios screen in dos mode, using a usb stick

        try these settings first,
        set qpi/vtt voltage to 1.315000v
        set dram voltage to 1.66v
leave xmp enabled if it will let you alter those voltages

if not try on auto and select manual timing spd
set memory multiplier to give you 1600mhz ram speed and enter timings yourself
        6
        8
        6
        24
        command rate 1T
if your unsure what to adjust read through your mb manual it should show you how to set your ram

it might not need a bios update i dont know, but auto for qpi/vtt wont be reliable

Re: Random freeze: x58 extreme / cpu problem?

          thanks for your answer :)

i tried the settings for qpi/vtt but after starting up win7 it freezed after 2 mins.
(actually i had to set the voltage a little bit higher cause i had no 1.315)

the dram voltage cannot be adjusted, dont know why. i dont find an option to edit the profile.

the timings for the ram are adjusted correctly now.

should i try to upgrade the bios?

Re: Random freeze: x58 extreme / cpu problem?

try setting xmp on auto now,and setup the ram speed timings yourself, maybe it will let you select 1.66v for dram then,is cpu voltage on auto too?do you have normal setting in cpu voltage list? if not then leave on auto

find uncore freq and set to twice what the memory multiplier is then add one to it,so 8x mem multi would be 17x uncore freq and so on,try with around 1.32-1.34v qpi/vtt if all that fails and it still freezes then go back in bios and update the bios from there but not in windows as if it crashes it will wreck your mb and will need rma

Re: Random freeze: x58 extreme / cpu problem?

i've put all the options i can to your values. didnt work. but i think i found the main problem now.

i always had the three 2GB modules in the white slots - as described in the manual. the bios showed also that there were 3 modules installed, triple channel mode enabled. but i didnt notice that in the summary there were only 4GB shown. wtf. so i tried different setups and tadaaa. slot a1 + a2 dead. know i have the pc running at dual channel mode + 1 single channel module.

i really hope it works now. otherwise i go for a bios upgrade...

thanks a lot for your help dude!

Re: Random freeze: x58 extreme / cpu problem?

have you tried memtest86+ on the "dead" DIMM?

I would test all the DIMMS in the 2 working slots. If they all work, RMA the Mobo. It's chicken****e then...

I you clear CMOS and restart your PC, having all memory modules in one colour of slots, it has to work with functioning RAM/Mobo. Generally 1.65V and 9-9-9-24 @ 2T is JEDEC standart for most RAM.
