  • Free File Server, Anyone know where i can get one?

I have an antique machine that's been just sitting around, the OS crapped out a while back, and we've taken a few things off it for scraps, but i've decided that at this point, it's useless as a PC (it's like 5 years old now), but I could still use the meager 20 gb's of storage. Plus it has sentimental value, so i don't just wanna pitch it. I was just wondering if anyone new where i could get some free file server software, preferrably linux, for this old thing. I don't wanna waste my money on the old girl, and she ain't got the kick in her to run anything hard-ware intensive. So please, lemme know.

    Thanks A billion, Linux Style.

any decent distro can be made into a networked file server without much effort.

Mandriva, SuSE, Fedora, Xandros, Ubuntu, Slackware, Debain... take your pick

Have a look at FreeNAS (http://www.freenas.org/) easy to set up and once it is going it can be configured and controlled from a web browser

FreeNAS is a free NAS (Network-Attached Storage) server, supporting: CIFS (samba), FTP, NFS, AFP, RSYNC, iSCSI protocols, S.M.A.R.T., local user authentication, Software RAID (0,1,5) with a Full WEB configuration interface. FreeNAS takes less than 32MB once installed on Compact Flash, hard drive or USB key.
