Start ups and Adobe Photoshop

I have installed Adobe Photoshop 6 and it has put an item in the startup folder with a dos typeicon, named Adobe Gamma Loader.exe. Is this a necessary item in the startup folder?

No it is not necessary. It supposedly gives you better color during your Photoshop sessions, but I haven't ever seen much difference. When I was using Photoshop, I deleted the icon.
