Well any old Pentium upwards will do though PII's and above are better but ya must use Method 2 explained here.

and what would be the cheapest way to setup a home network? at the moment, i've just got a SMC network card on my PC hooked up to my cable modem and it's abit kx7-333 mobo so no onboard :(

Yes ya should be able to do one w/u (work unit) a day (or close to) plus the 3GB cap I had in Sydney was quite sufficient.

and how should i setup a network? buy another network card and crossover cable it to my laptop?

That would be the easiest and cheapest way to do it (I started off that way but with 13 PC's on the network here now a few switches are needed).
