  • New Rig Help(not sure what to buy)

    Hi guys,

I'm looking to build a new rig for gaming and 3D rendering in Autodesk come November/December. This will only be my 2nd custom rig, my current one came from Cyberpowerpc. I want to build it myself, I've done a few upgrades but I'm ready for more kick. I want the best performance and graphics, with a budget of $800-$1000. possibly more. Would also be nice to be future proof for about 5-6 years.

    My current rig:

    Vista 64bit

    Bloomfield Intel i7 920 at 2.67GHz(not OC)
    Stock intel heatsink

    Asus P6T Mobo

    16GB Corsair Vengeance PC3-1600(2000MHz)

Sli Evga Geforce GTS 250 1GB(not OC)

Kingwin LZG-1000watt PSU(I plan using this on new rig)

    1X Hitachi HDP725050GLA360 500GB(OS)
    1X Seagate ST31500341AS 1.5TB(storage)

    What I'm looking at:

    Unsure on OS

    Intel i7 3770k

    Asus P8Z77-V Deluxe Mobo

Corsair H100 Liquid Cooling(or something in $100 range)

Plan on keeping 16gb vengeance or something in $120 range)

Geforce 560ti(or something in $200-$300 range)

    120-150GB OCZ SSD
    1-2tb HDD(might use current seagate)

    Kingwin LZG-1000watt PSU

Thermaltake V3 Case(my pc room stays warm, need good airflow)

What do you guys think? Whats a good choice?

      Thanks for reply,
I can't wait as Crysis 3 and Black Ops 2 are hitting the shelves soon. If not for that I'd consider waiting.

Check out the newest GTX 660 Ti video cards and comparable AMD models.
When you've decided on the motherboard model, check the memory manufacturer's website to confirm which memory kits have been tested with your motherboard model. If needed, double check with their tech support people.
SSD prices are very low right now, HDD prices are still quite high.

Good things come to those who wait, but instant gratification is hard to resist.

Re: New Rig Help(not sure what to buy)

I'm keeping the Kingwin 1000w because a lot of usb devices and no need to buy a new one. I like your thinking on the 7970, sick. I'll look into the mobo's recommended. What do you think of the AsRock Extreme 3 mobo? do you think my RAM is good? If I wanted faster RAM what would be a good choice?

What 64bit OS Supports 16GB RAM? Is it easy to over clock RAM? never tried it. Oh and what is Raid?

Windows 7 x64 Home Premium supports up to 16GB of memory.
Higher end win7 x64 versions support much higher limits.
Memory Limits for Windows Releases describes memory limits for XP through win7.

                    GPU: HIS Radeon HD 7970
                    PSU: Kingwin LZG-1000

Does that look like a good setup?

Yea its cheaper by like $10 but you can get a $30 MIR at Newegg. I used pcpartpicker.com for pricing. However I may go with Windforce for more air flow.

                          • An i7-3770 with hyper threading might do better with rendering, but probably won't help with gaming performance.
Check to see if AutoDesk rendering performance will be better with 32GB of memory.
                          • Recent ASRock motherboard reviews at HardOCP have reported mixed results. Some models had issues and others were quite good.
Do your homework and choose your motherboard brand/model carefully.
There have been quite a few threads in the TweakTown ASRock forum with pci-e 3.0 video cards not working and/or many higher end video cards not being recognized. In many cases, an updated or beta bios was required to fix the problem.
                          • I highly recommend using a synchronous or toggle NAND 120 - 240GB ssd as an o/s boot drive and use a hard drive for storage and all other files. Keep in mind that many games require a lot of disk space when installed. I prefer Western Digital Black hard drives.
                          • Look closely at the hard drive warranty period, many only have a one year warranty!!
                          • Check with Corsair tech support and verify that your current Vengeance memory model has been tested with the z77 motherboard that you will be using.

There will be excellent holiday sale prices at places like Newegg starting in mid to late November and continuing until January 1st.
