  • Pretty mundane, but what do you think?

My dad asked me to build him a computer to replace the one he currently uses. He doesn't do much other then run office applications (Word, Quicken, etc...) and do some internet browsing. He just wanted to upgrade the aging computer he currently uses. To give you an idea of its age, it's a P500, which was pretty high end when we bought it.

So what do you think of the following system I put together?

    Intel Celeron D 2.8 GHz
    ASUS P4GE-MX
    Corsair PC2100 - 1x512MB
    WD 80GB 7200RPM IDE HDD
    Lite-On 16x Dual Drive
    350W PS Case

Comes to just over $500 at Newegg, with shipping included.

If you insist on buying a Celeron, then you'll want 2 sticks of ram. However, its likely you can get an AMD Sempron based system for less money:

    Sempron 2600 - $86

    Asus A7V400MX - $52

    512MB Corsair PC2700
    - $65

Plus the other stuff you said (optical drive, hard disk, case) about $350.

What brand case? You don't want to get a crappy PSU, which will happen if you don't go with certain companies for case PSUs.

Agreed on the Sempron part. Get a retail Sempron and an nForce 2 or KT600 chipset motherboard.
