I am building my first computer. My compaq is all souped up and is working perfect and is no fun anymore. I have already picked these parts -new egg is great. this computer is just for internet surfing no gaming. a couple of questions are

    what power supply/watts/good brand
    40gig hard drive/long lasting

    Re: first build

Drop the Athlon and cooler and get this:

    Faster, longer warranty, cheaper overall.

Get an 80GB drive from Maxtor, Seagate, or Western Digital, preferably Seagate. A 40GB drive is only marginally cheaper these days, and you basically pay about $5 for twice as much space if you get an 80GB.

    A 350W Antec/Thermaltake/Enermax ought to do.

    Do you need RAM?

        Re: first build

You'll want PC2700 as a minimum for that CPU, PC2100 will be a bottleneck for the CPU.

          Re: first build

The memory has me confused this is what it said on the mother board RAM: 3x DIMM for DDR400/333/266 Max 3GB- Thats why i picked ddr266. I think this is the hard drive i will use.I like the 5 year warrenty. I may be able to spend more on the cpu.I was thinking this athalon xp2500 but the athalonxp 2900 is only $15 more. What memory would I need for the xp cpu? Am I going to be able to clock the processor and the memory with this motherboard? also what are good cd reader writers and 3.5 floppy a drives? Thanks for the help so far

            Re: first build

That CPU has a DDR333 (166MHz) FSB but PC2100 is only DDR266 (133MHz) where as PC2700 runs at the same speed as that CPU's FSB.

              Re: first build

Ok I get it I use a pc 2700 memory chip to match the fsb of the cpu but not more than 3 gigs total . I just want to get what I need to get the computer turned on so I can learn what you do to program it. I will start with one 256 meg chip and add 2 more later.

What are the good brands 256 meg memory?

              CDRW good brands?

Am I going to be able to clock the proscessor and the memory?

This is the case I was looking at
where do you put the hard drive?
Pics of a similar completed system would help alot

                Re: first build

Get PC3200 or PC2700 from Kreton, Corsair, PQI, Crucial, Geil, OCZ, or Mushkin.

Look to the lower right of the picture. Those bays are where your drives go; you just have to screw them in the keep them in.
