  • Overclock an FX 5900 or 9800 nonPro nonSE? (merged threads)

What do you buy and why?

I'm talking about spending between $200 and $300 here. I was thinking of Geforce FX 5900 256MB and overclocking it to 5950 speeds, which perform amazingly well in benchmarks. The other option is to overclock a 128MB 9800 nonPro nonSE to 9800 Pro status, which does well but not as well as the 5950 in some new benchmarks, but there is always the video quality argument. How do you guys think I'll win? Over the last few years I've had: TNT2 Ultra -> Radeon 32MB DDR -> Geforce2MX -> Radeon 9000 Pro, and now it's only logical I go back to nVidia LOL :)

Kind of a pointless thread, but whatever.

I already have a Radeon 9800 Pro, and 300 bucks Canadian won't get you very far over here. I'd buy a new motherboard and get me a 512 stick of PC3200, or perhaps a new Pentium 4 2.(x)c processor, considering I have a 2.5a.

OK, pretend this thread is to give advice to someone about what video card they should buy if they have $300 and they plan to be overclocking said video card. (For example FX 5900 to 5950 or 9800 to 9800 Pro)

Not sure on the US prices for a 9800 Pro, but if you can get a 9800, then go for it. With decent cooling you can overclock it past 9800 Pro speeds.

I would buy a 9800np for 275* then flash it to a pro then overclock that baby to 450/340 then yea!
