  • Samsung 840 pro 128gb and 256gb performances

Samsung 840 pro 128gb and Samsung 840 pro 256gb performances are different ?

    Different specs are just about sequential write speed ( 390MB/sec - 520MB/sec ) and cache memory ( 256gb - 512gb ).

Can you really perceive these different specs while your are working with your computer, or are they just something for benchmarks ?

    Thank you

    Enrico

you probably wouldnt notice the difference other than benchmarks

alot of it is down to toggle nand, the more nand chips they use the faster the speed, some drives have more nand chips than others

Re: Samsung 840 pro 128gb and 256gb performances

You can't focus on any particular ssd benchmark result, you need to look at the whole picture.

      HardOCP
likes all of the Samsung 840 models except for the 120GB model with TLC Nand.
The TweakTown reviewer complains that the Samsung ssd's have higher latency that hurts real world performance and feel.

You need to read and understand how and why the reviewers test the way they do and they should provide a link to their test methodology so that you can better understand how all the pieces fit together in the review.

Samsung owner reviews report higher reliability and far fewer problems, such as some ssd models that suddenly aren't recognized by the system weeks or months later. The Samsung software is much easier to use compared with the software that their competitors provide.

Smaller ssd sizes (less than 250GB) have lower performance than larger drives. In some cases, the 250GB sizes sometimes have slightly better benchmark scores than the larger 500GB drives.

Re: Samsung 840 pro 128gb and 256gb performances

Sequential, large file speeds are not the only thing that matters about SSD performance at all. The small file, 4KB, and random read/write speed is actually more important for an OS drive than high sequential speed.

Access time is also important, but given more real world tests I've seen, the Samsung SSDs don't suffer at all from slower access times.

The random read and write speed difference in the specs between the 840 Pro 128GB and 256GB is so small it makes no difference. As you asked, in actual use you would not detect any difference, or a difference that was significant. If you were constantly writing very large files, of 100's of MBs, any difference in speed would be a few seconds, which is hardly an issue.

The real advantage of large capacity SSDs, is not only the greater storage space, but what happens when a SSD is filled close to its capacity. SSDs need empty space to maintain their write performance, due to the way that NAND storage functions. The more free space available, the better the write performance will be, long term. Enterprise SSDs typically have an extra ~50% of the user space set aside for this reason. Actually, all SSDs should be built this way, but due to the complaints about the pricing of consumer SSDs, manufactures don't do it.

Come on guys, check the reviews.

The Samsung 120/128GB drives all have write latency issues. The issue is related to interleaving, both TweakTown and HardOCP reported the issue. It effects both the non-Pro and Pro 840 drives as well as the 830 128GB.
