Configure SATA as IDE or AHCI in the BIOS?

In the BIOS, my SATA hard drive is configured as IDE (default setting). The other two options are RAID & AHCI. I heard that using the AHCI option can increase the hard drive's performance. My mobo is Asus P5K Pro (P35/ICH9R chipset). Current OS is Win7 x64.

My questions regarding AHCI:
1. Do I need to do a fresh install of Windows after changing to AHCI?
2. Do I need to install additional drivers/software from Intel to use AHCI, e.g Intel Rapid Storage Technology or Intel Matrix Storage, after doing a fresh OS installation?
3. Will changing from IDE to AHCI have an affect on or cause issues to my DVD drive, which uses IDE?

You can switch to ahci without re installing,what OS are you using?win 7? Thing is it might cause your IDE dvd drive to not work,you won't see much difference if any from IDE to ahci mode

Windows 7 HP X64

In case my IDE DVD drive goes missing, getting a SATA DVD drive will solve it right?

Yes,a SATA dvd drive will work,I had an IDE dvd drive and I had to keep switching back from ahci to IDE in bios for it to work so I ditched it for a SATA dvd drive,now I can keep it on ahci in the bios and everything works

Just Google enabling ahci win 7 ,and the try tweak guide will pop up,it saves you re installing

Good news: My DVD drive still works, in AHCI mode!


Bad news: Well, hopefully my lil' bro and I won't be dumb enough to accidentally eject the HDD instead of the USB drive.

My problem is related to this question I believe, lol. My computer keeps automatically switching my Bios setting from IDE to AHCI. I will be using my computer them all of a sudden it will just reboot automatically by itself, when it does it goes into a continuous rebooting loop. Sometimes if I go to my Bios and check the IDE setting it will have switched to AHCI, sometimes not. It use to do it sometimes when I had a power failure. I have checked my HD in another computer and it boots fine. I am running Windows XP currently. What would cause this Bios setting to keep switching by itself, sometimes I will run my computer for 5 or 6 hrs, then it will just start rebooting. Could it be a Power Supply problem causing this. Looking for any ideas please, lol
