  • Problem with a Samsung Spinpoint disk....

    Hey,
I usually fix things myself (either through knowing what I'm doing or internets searching etc) but this has me and my techy friends completely stumped.
I have a Samsung Spinpoint 250GB SATA-300 (SP2504C) which has worked fine since I got it several years ago - until I had to replace a blown motherboard a few weeks ago. Since then, the computer refuses to recognise the HDD in the BIOS and boot fails (BSOD) when it is plugged in. I can boot fine with it unplugged, and once the OS is loaded I can plug it in and it works fine until the computer boots again.
    Any ideas anyone?

    Thanks guys

Try another SATA header on the mainboard. It isn't that uncommon to have one that does not work properly. If this takes care of it you can RMA the board to get a full set of working SATA ports.

Have you got the latest BIOS for your motherboard? Possible try that.

Yep, have checked that as well. Flashed it again to make sure, but no change.

I have seen many systems that come through our tech room with your exact same issue. If possible try the drive in another system and see if it boots. In some cases hard drives that are "broken" can prevent a system from booting, the bios usually will not read the hard drive or show a string of random characters. From there the system will not start in most cases.

The only way to confirm is to try what darth said, or try it in another PC or external enclosure. You may also want to try another sata cable if one is available.

It's very likely that the drive was damaged when the mainboard failed.
