Which Hard-Drive brand should I buy?

Hello

I need to buy a 1TB hard-drive.

I have SATA.

I need an internal one.

I need the following;

1TB
Good quality
Cheap

Please tell me which of the following brands I should chose;

Western Digital
Western Digital AV
Maxtor
Samsung/Samsung 2
Seagate

Please reply ASAP as I need the space!

I tend to be a little partial to Seagate when it comes to keeping my data on large drives. I also tend to skip over the consumer versions and head straight to the nearline drives since they are suppose to have a better mean time between failures.

It is your data, how much is it worth to you?

Yes, this is my data.

It's important, but I'm a home user (sort of home business but not really, at least not yet, and any data that important wouldn't be that big file size and I'd just back it up to gmail).

So I'd be thoroughly pissed off if I lossed my data, but I wouldn't lose money (except if it is out of the warrantly period... :|)

What are your thoughts on Hitachi?

HItachi makes really good drives as well. I tend to see them when they first come out and the large drives that use 5 platters so they run hot. The new 500GB drives really wouldn't have this issue but I don't have one to tell you one way or the other. I can say that I have one of Hitachi's first 500GB drives and I use it all of the time to back stuff up to for short term storage. It has been a great drive and even suffered a few hard falls. It fell once with 4 WD Raptor 150GB drives, 3 of the Raptors died, one was saved and the Hitachi was fine.

After completing a polless poll, I came up with the following results;

4 - Hitachi
13 - Western Digital
11 - Seagate

Winner: Western Digital

So I'll be getting Western Digital now.

Probably two separate 500GB ones in RAID 0 (as per Arne's suggestion).

I found out that 640GB Hard-Drives are both faster and cheaper than the 500GB ones (at least for WesternDigital)

For ten dollars more you could get Seagate 1TB drives when they are on sale which seems to happen more and more. I just picked up 8 of them and they are wicked. I already had 5 for my personel NAS and have been impressed.

Start here:

Seagate Computers - Barracuda 7200.11 ST31000340AS 1TB Hard Drive - ST31000340AS

Then look for coupon codes and you will be able to get a 1TB drive for 100 Dollars or less.

I found you a 1TB drive for 99. This is a Hitachi drive, I also have one of these and it is a good drive.

I am working on cataloging the performance of all of these drives in my collection. As you might be able to tell there are quite a few. I believe all of the benchmarks all finished, they just need put into charts and a way to show the data produced.

If I made charts like the ones I use in the reviews we would have to scoll for every to get to the next page button.
