reformat question

I'm not sure this is the right place to post this, but i'll give it a shot.

I was thinking about reformatting my HDD, but the thing is, I only have one drive. It's partitioned just about in half, one half containg stuff I'd like to keep, and the other containg windows and installed software. I was wandering if it's possible to re-install WinXP in the first partition, reformatting it or whatever, and leaving the other part alone?

Yes it is. You choose which partition to format, not which physical drive.
