  • OMG WHY??? WHY???? stupid new cpu

Its annoying i set out to buy a new faster cpu to improve my performance and im riddled with problems that i didnt have yesterday.
Today i received and then installed my new athlon xp 2100+
which came with a hsf amd approved (stock fan not very reliable i know but hang on) the procedure was uneventful which is always a good sign. I had previously updated the bios of my Asus A7A266-E to version 1101 which is required in order to run an xp 2100+ so when the thing booted up fine i was happy thinking YAY! it works. When i checked asus probe i saw that it was running pretty hot tho' so i applied thremal paste and checked whether it was seated correctly and then started again...the idle temp was 70 and load was 80. This is hot but thats not what im asking because i already know that i must buy a new case and fan (the case preferably cos its old and has no fans)
my system seems to run fine on the desktop but run any game for more than a few minutes and my pc crasheseither to desktop or to reboot neede stage.
What i need to know before i spend my hard earned cash is if there is a possible cause for this other than the high temp of my cpu....I have been to other forums and most people actually ignore my question and say buy this new fan ive got it its wicked which really isnt of any help at all.(unless the fan is the only problem which in case its more than helpful...but i doubt it)
why does my pc crash now when it didnt whilst running a 1ghz t-bird. What can be causing this? anybody could u jsut throw solutions at me for me to test cos i really need to know b4 i buy a new case (if i spend the money on a case and it turns out its something else then i could've blown the chances of fixing it any time soon)

    ooh yeah forgot
    im running win98
    512 pc133 ram
asus geforce 3 pure v8200 on 23.11 drivers
    wd 40gb 7200rpm hd
thanks for any responses guys I really appreciate it.

If it runs fine under normal conditions and only craps out on you when gaming, then it could very well be a heat issue. Since we already know that your current case sucks, we won't go into the importance of airflow going through the system, but you can at least do this...

Take the side panel off the case and put a fan by it that blows air onto the processor portion of the mainboard. Yeah, I know that it isn't good to have unfiltered air going through the system, but this is for testing only. After you get this set up, then try to run your games again. If you still get frequent crashes at about the same time as before, then look somewhere else for the problem. But if you can now play without incident or for a much longer time, then you've nailed the problem.

Oh... and I wouldn't put too much stock in the 70-80 degree reading from Asus Probe. It is notorious for being the most inaccurate utility made. :(

Also if it IS a heat problem, you could go with the new water cooled cases! Those are supposedly MUCH cooler than regular fans.
      Here are my specs:

Western Digital 7,200 RPM 40 gig IDE Hard Drive.(NTFS- file system) AMD Athlon XP 2600 processor.(standard fan and heatsink-Thoroughbred Core-standard speed-NO OVERCLOCK) 1 gig of Samsung DDRAM(PC 2700- 333 mhz....2-512mb sticks running in dual channel mode).Ati Radeon 8x 9600 XT (8x is enabled on motherboard). Soundblaster Audigy 2 sound card. Motorola sb 5100 cable modem (Insight Communications-Cable Connection) BenQ 16x DVD- RECORDER.(records -R/-RW or +R/+RW and CD-R formats) LG 52x32x52 CD Burner. Its definitely a heat problem i underclocked from 1.73mhz to 1.3mhz and it hasnt crashed once not even whilst playing a game and now its nearer 70 underload and only 55-60 when idle............looks like tis time to get a new case and fan (which though...i had heat with this case and my old 1ghz too so i reckon the casew first and then the fan ) i know the volcano 7+ would do nicely for this cpu (cos i dont o/c) so some1 recommend me a decent case (im on a tight budget though peeps so reasonable ones :D )

        thanks for the responses

Ok then there's the Aopen H600A <img src="http://www.aopen.com/products/housing/images/h600a_b.jpg"> which you can get here and with the addition of a side intake fan plus blowhole exhaust fan is an excellent case. In fact I use it for my No.2 PC.

Here also is something that may be of help to you. ;)

                      ?
                      cheers for the posts.

The site will tell you but I believe you can order it with up to 5 80mm x 80mm fans (comes with 1 standard). You can add them later to save on the original purchase price.
