  • What's the best CPU for gaming?

The question is plain and simple and it's probably been asked a thousand times; "Whats the best CPU out now for gaming?"

I've started this thread on Tomshardware.com but the question was never really answered. My budget for this build is pretty high, but at the same time I don't want to spend 1000 bucks on a processor. I would greatly appreciate the info. And before everyone gets started I am the biggest noob in this forum.

Re: What's the best CPU for gaming?

It depends on your graphics card preferences really. AMD based motherboards offer Ati's Radeon crossfire X, and do not offer Geforce or Nvidia SLI. Some of the new intels offer CrossfireX. Some offer SLI. Some offer both.

Thank you for replying. I'm intending to use the ATI 5970s (x2) and crossfire them (pardon impropper term). I read the review for the Gigabyte x58 ud7 from windwithme and that seems (I don't really know how to read all his information [i'm still new to this]) like the board I want to use. What do you think?

I would get a motherboard with the AMD790FXT chipset with an AMD PhenomII 965 cpu http://www.newegg.com/Store/Category...PUs-Processors and at least 4 to 8GB's of memory.

I keep reading that AMD is built more for gaming than Intel. My thing is I want to build the best gaming rig with a 3000-4000 dollar budget.

When you think AMD is there any particular board that comes to mind?

Now let me ask this; you aren't bias because you own AMD yourself? Is there a side by side comparison I can look at that you know of?

No, I am bias, because I don't like to throw away hard earned money. The statistics are out on which is best for gaming. Just look online.

Re: What's the best CPU for gaming?

AMD typically is better for gaming.... most games are GPU based not CPU aided so you don't need the CPU I have....

I got it for HD video work and intensive 3d rendering and vector work...

For gaming only or mainly I'd say go with AMD.. you save money and in most cases the CPU I have won't do any better than the 965 around stock to 3.8ish or however you wish to OC it...

And just cause you can buy something doesn't mean you should now... I'm not sure one needs 2 5970s; not that I'm trying to be rude at your choice, but in most cases one will tear through anything and just make games look like a joke....

Do you have a 30inch monitor.. or a multi-monitor setup and will be utilizing eyefinity... if not then getting 2 of those won't do any better... and in some cases not offer the performance you'd expect and want.. for example if you play at 1280x1024; yes some of my friends do and still have 15inch CRT screens, a 4850 would be better than a 4890..... cause 4890s were designed for the 1920x1200 gaming scaling pretty much... so I'd hope you are using a single 30inch or a few 2-4 24+ monitors for 2 of those cause if you run one monitor only then you won't need 2 of those. I'd hope again though it's at least 1920x1200... using 5970s far less one on say 1280x960 or 1280x1024 whatever resolution you'd chose is a waste of money.. unless you however need it for video work or animation....

In gaming computer you can use nvidia GeForce GTX 480 and intel Desktop Board DP55KG use. You can use 4 GB ram for gmaing pupose.

That is a very important point: not all games are bottlenecked by the same resource. Some are GPU-intensive. Some are threaded. Some are not.
