  • amd 64 compatability

I know the amd 64 can run both 64 and 32 bit applications, but to run i 64 bit app do i need to have a 64 bit version of windows and if so can i then only run 64 bit apps and not 32.

to run a 64-bit app you will need a 64-bit OS, whether it be Windows, Linux, or something else is up to you :)
I'm not 100% possitive, but I think you can run 32-bit apps on a 64-bit OS.

Depends on the OS. Windows XP 64-bit and Longhorn have 32-bit emulation (just like all other versions of Windows have 16-bit emulation), but a Linux 64-bit OS may not have 32-bit emulation. Most probably do, though; it would be much harder to use popular applications.
