    Re: New Motherboard

Sounds like you might be trying to purchase the same type monitor I am trying to purchase, except I want hdmi 2.0, and Nvidia compatible.

      Re: New Motherboard

When you say the GTX 980 might not be enough the the Acer 270, do you mean it would take a second 980, or a newer card? Was thinking if I get the Acer 270, and then upgrade the card in the future?

        Re: New Motherboard

        From Acer XB270HU 27-inch 144Hz IPS G-Sync Gaming Monitor Review - What's Hot, What's Not & Final Thoughts

        What's Hot

No Compromises: Acer has spared next to nothing with the XB270HU, providing some of the best specs you can find in a gaming monitor. Not only that, but the company has done all of this and still been capable of using an IPS panel. It's amazing.

G-Sync Continues to Impress: Once you've used a G-Sync monitor, it's hard to go back. Once you've used the Acer XB270HU, you'll never want to go back to whatever previous monitor you were using.

Acer is Now the New King of Gaming Monitors: ASUS held this title with the ROG Swift, but Acer has snapped it away from them. The XB270HU is the best gaming monitor you can buy. At $799 it's not cheap, but it's also not priced out of the question.

Best of Both Worlds: What makes the Acer XB270HU even better, is that it's no longer a "work OR play" monitor. The XB270HU is a "work AND play" monitor thanks to its IPS-based panel. I sit in front of a monitor every single day and the difference between a TN and IPS panel is noticeable. But when I have a single display that can go from work to game in a flash, that's something worth talking about.

        What's Not

Steep Hardware Requirements: We said the same about our ASUS ROG Swift; in order to run the Acer XB270HU at its intended resolution and framerate, you're going to need some serious hardware. We would recommend NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 SLI, or if you can spare it, Titan X in SLI. You won't regret it, though.

        Final Thoughts

Acer has crafted the best gaming monitor that money can buy with the XB270HU. It replaces the ASUS ROG Swift as the gaming monitor that I have recommended many friends to buy, thanks to it featuring an IPS panel. This means that you can use the Acer XB270HU as both a work, and play monitor - something that I've found myself doing.

Sitting to the left of the Acer XB270HU I'm currently typing in front of is the 34-inch LG curved ultrawide monitor with a resolution of 3440x1440. As good as that is for writing content on each day, I can't see myself shifting away from 144Hz. Once you get used to 144Hz and G-Sync, it's just so hard to go back - even when it's for productivity, not just games.

Where to from here? The next logical step is 3440x1440 at 144Hz with G-Sync, or 4K at 144Hz with G-Sync. This will happen sometime next year, which has me excited to see what Acer can do next. But until then... hail to the new king, baby.
In the review they used a GTX 980 Ti video card. The reviewer reported a great gaming experience and didn't say that he needed a more powerful gpu setup.

A web search using: acer xb270hu review will provide additional useful information.
See what video card setup was used while gaming.

The PCPER review reports that there is no 3D Vision Support. In their review they briefly mentioned that a GTX 960 worked OK.

            Re: New Motherboard

            Now that's an interesting option.
Let's see, 3 x $269 = $807 so you could eventually do a three monitor gaming setup for $7 more than the price for one Acer XB270HU 27 inch monitor.

FWIW I've been using an Asus VH242H 24 inch monitor for close to six years and never had a bit of trouble.

Hmm, you've given me an idea.
Newegg has five different Asus 24 inch IPS monitors in the $200 - $500 price range.
They aren't gaming monitors, which is fine by me and now I'm thinking of buying two of the $200 models instead of one 27 inch WQHD IPS monitor.

This is the Asus Monitor that I previously have been thinking about getting:

              Re: New Motherboard

Let me ask one more question. Got the ASUS GTX 980, which is 3d, Nvidia other good stuff, HDMI 2.0, and HDCP enabled for any future UHD decoding, and there are no monitors that work with it? Silly me thinking that this card is highly recommended, and been out for awhile, there would be many monitors ASUS or other manufacturers would make for this. Now a dumb question, run two cables to the monitor, one HDMI, the other Display Port, or DV1, then pick which input to the monitor to use? HDMI input for 3d movies, and photography, select input two for gaming?

                Re: New Motherboard

I don't know what you mean by "there would be many monitors ASUS or other manufacturers would make for this."

When a newer connection standard is finalized new or updated hardware needs to be implemented. With a monitor, the question is when does the manufacturer add or change the hardware? With a video card the change is probably made when new models come out. With a monitor it's more complicated, such as do they add a new video connector socket to existing monitors? Do they remove an existing connector to make room for the new connector? What about all the existing monitors that are ready for shipment? What about the existing models that are in the retailer's stock rooms. Newer motherboard models often have new features that can't be used immediately until other newer hardware becomes available.

                Dumb question? Naw.
I do have a problem with stupid questions, ignorance is not a sin but stupidity is.

To keep things simple, with a single monitor setup I'm pretty sure that you only need one video cable connection going from the video card to the monitor, but in some cases you need to be sure to use the "correct" connection. This might not be a problem with your GTX 980, but it probably would be a problem with my older GTX 460 video card if I was trying to use a newer high end monitor.

The following (or similar) information is probably in your GTX 980 and/or monitor user manuals.

From the Asus PB278Q Series LCD Monitor User Guide:
                HDMI cannot support WQHD
While the PB278Q supports up to 2560 x 1440 WQHD resolutions including DVI-dual link, HDMI and DisplayPort, some graphics cards only support up to 1920 x 1200 resolution content transmission via HDMI. Please check with your local distributor or retailer on the hardware limitations of your laptop or desktop.
You will probably need to check the user manual to see if all of the video card's output connectors can support 144Hz operation and you might need to use the Nvidia Control Panel to change some settings.

A minor point, with higher end hardware you might need to use a DVI-D dual-link video cable.

Why should I make things simple, when I can make them needlessly complicated. I did the monitor last, thinking it would be simple. I may just need to do without 3d in a monitor.

You are very knowledgeable, and patient. The reason HDMI 2.0, HDCP compatible, is for future encryption of high definition content weather movies, or gaming. From what I have been reading the past six months is HDCP is coming very soon. Now with the introduction of HDMI 2.0a should be along shortly. In the television world, many of todays televisions may become obsolete for displaying new UHD product. I was trying to protect this computer for the next few years, if possible. Doing only some gaming, that is of secondary importance. In the television world just about all new televisions come HDMI 2.0a and HDCP enabled, along with 3d. My lack of knowledge in the computer world, led me to believe these items would be available in monitors all in one neat plug and play, and on the way. So I need to think a bit more. I think I need to decide the best connection from the ASUS 980GTX to monitor, once that is decided, it will probably be down to a couple monitor choices.

                        Re: New Motherboard

Not to rain on your parade, it was Nvidia, Asus, et. al. that did a lousy job by not providing easy to find information relating to all current monitors that are "3d-Vision Ready". I've spent way too much time trying to find information but later today I'll post the most important information that I found.

I found a recent Newegg review where it said:
I had to have windows set my monitor (Asus VG248QE) to 120hz, not he 144hz I originally was using.
I'll give the most helpful suggestion right now; spend time reading the longest and most detailed customer reviews on Newegg and Amazon.

It might help to download and read the 639 page Nvidia universal installation guide, but don't worry, the guide covers 11 different languages.

My favorite finding was this gem in the Asus VG248 monitor manual:
Only DisplayPort and DVI ports support 3D feature given NVIDIA 3D Vision Kit is available.
This by the way is the full extent of their in depth information about 3D-Vision in the monitor manual.

                          Re: New Motherboard

Don't spend too much time on me. Heading off to work soon, but had time this morning to check out some forums on 3d monitors. Most interesting is the Nvidia community, where I found some recent 2015 threads with the same questions I have about new monitors and 3d support from the manufacturers or great lack of it. After spending a couple hours, it seems the only monitor available now to support Nvidia 3d is the ASUS ROG. With the higher definition. If this is agreeable, will probably just purchase this monitor.

                            Re: New Motherboard

It looks like the Asus ROG SWIFT PG278Q monitor is the only monitor that supports G-Sync and is also 3D-Vision ready.
Even without these features it looks like it's one of the best gaming monitors.

Where to Buy G-SYNC Monitors and Modules | GeForce has a list of G-Sync ready monitors.
                            G-Sync requirements:
                            • Desktop Requirements:
                            • GPU: G-SYNC features require an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 Ti BOOST GPU or higher.
                            • Driver: R340.52 or higher
                            • Operating System:
                              • Windows 8.1
                              • Windows 8
                              • Windows 7
                            • System Requirement: Must support DisplayPort 1.2 directly from the GPU.

3D Glasses and Displays | NVIDIA has a list of 3D-Vision ready monitors.
A few of the monitors come with the 3D-Vision kit.
Some of the monitors in the list say:
                            • 3D Vision 2-Ready
                            • 3D Vision Ready with Lightboost
                            • 3D Vision Surround-Ready, 120Hz
                            • HDMI 1.4 3D Support, 3D Vision Surround-Ready, 144Hz
                            • 3D Lightboost, 3D Vision Surround-Ready, 120Hz
                            • Includes 3D Vision Glasses, HDMI 1.4 3D Support, Built-in Emitter, 3D Vision Surround-Ready, 120Hz

It looks like 3D-Vision 2 is the newest version.

Surprisingly I don't see the ROG SWIFT PG278Q monitor in the Nvidia 3D-Vision list.

                            From the Rog Swift webpage:
edit: The best current price is $738 with free shipping from Amazon, B&H Photo and Best Buy.

Going to the ASUS website, the GTX 980 strix. Looking at the specs., says Display Port regular, wonder if it the early version or the 1.2 version?

Looking deeper into ASUS website, does state display ports are 1.2
