  • Exceeding supported memory

I have a Compaq Presario SR2010NX. Crucial.com says it can take 2 1gb sticks in the two slots. What would happen if I put a 2gb stick in one of the slots and a 1gb in the other? I was looking to upgrade, and thought I bought a 2gb kit on ebay, but I recieved a single 2gb stick instead.

Edit: I currently have 1gb in it with one empty slot, but I believe that 1gb is corrupted. Memtest came up clean with a quick test, but some of my games are getting a memory read error(Ex: "[Program] has referenced memory at [random address]. Memory at [same address] can not be read")

It is generally a chipset that will limit the amount of memory. When you go over it, the system will not recognize the oversized module and pretent it doesn't exist.

I took the risk and plugged it in. It seems to run fine, and Windows System Specifications reads as 3gb.
