IE8 error "XXX" address is not established or setup on world wide web

Ok, what in the world is this???? I am working on a customer's pc that was infected by over 140 virus/malware...(kid's pc) And when I open up IE8 or IE7 for that matter, I get this error: "XXX address is not established or setup on world wide web" HEH!?!?!

I have read all over, remove crappy Norton with removal tool, but that is not helping the issue. So here is the crazy part. I can get online on AOL's/Compaq website. WEIRD? Who wants to go there? Anyhow. Youtube.com won't come up, even Google.com of all places, won't load at all. Any help? All thoughts here are worthy!!! Every penny saved equals cents. Each of your thoughts will give me more help than I've had already...

How about firefox, does it work?

If firefox also works you may just need to adjust the internet connection options, LAN Settings. Try with automatically detect settings boxed checked, and without

Well it is a dangerous tool, and not easy to explain how to use it safely.

If you know a lot about what you are doing you may be fine, if not don't start deleting things or you can make it worse.

Go ahead and install and run a scan and save a log file, then upload and post it here and I will have a look

Ok, so I did my final last ditch effort and ran combofix (I usually WON'T run this unless I have to)...won't say anymore about that b/c they are real secretive about their stuff and it fixed a couple things and all is well now. I can connect to all websites and all the internet browsers work perfect...? Weird huh? I also think that this laptop is set to a certain wireless internet setup, if I connect to my wireless network, then it won't work, but when connected to it's original which is a linksys router (very odd) it will connect and runs really fast...whadaya think?

I like Dial-a-Fix better myself, you ever use that?

For your connection/router issues, I'd suggest you uninstall all drivers and delete all connections in network manager, then reinstall the drivers and make new connections.

That should fix it all up.

Never used that before, but thanks for the info on it, I will get it. I checked it this morning and the system booted up and internet was fast! i dunno, ya, I do know that Combofix is pretty dangerous, but you always gotta make sure you do what it tells you. Or you will definently have issues and I like to run it in SAFE mode w/ networking (in case it needs an update.)
