wireless internet with no access point?

Does anyone know wether it's possible to share an internet connection with a wireless enabled laptop/pda and a desktop with a wireless pci card? It's just it'd be cheaper than me getting an access point and it'd allow me to use the wireless hotsynch function on my pda which is about 5 times as fast. Thanks for any suggestions.

You can use 2 wireless nic`s in adhoc mode without any problems. However if you want to have more than 2 computers linked you will need an access point and use infrastructure mode.
