O.O yeah I know I have a friend who still has an AGP card lol

His issue is can he put an 8x 3.0 AGP card in the 4x 2.0 slot and it'll just work at the slower speed or will it not work outright at all?

This time I didn't know cause I only ever dealt with 2 AGP cards and never had to deal with this exact issue nor do I know anyone who has so any old guru know and can shed light on this to help my friend I'll be grateful as I'm sure he will be too.

Oops forgot to add to maybe make it easier to answer I suppose....

There is a physical difference in design between PCI express x4 and x16 lanes... so you clearly can't use a GPU on a x4 slot...

Is AGP or was it similar so a AGP 2 or 4x slot is physically different than a AGP 3 or 8x slot so an 8x card cannot go in a 4x slot or is it the same physically connection just higher bandwidth?

Do you know which motherboard and card? I have a Pentium 3 with a 4x agp slot intel 815 chipset with a x8 Nvidia-6200. It works a bit slower but fine.

Mobo: Asus P4B266LM

GPU: HD2400 most likely but he was also looking into others but wasn't sure..

Maybe someone can suggest other cards that may work on the board...

I could be wrong but it seems to me that there were no real issues with mixing and matching 4X and 8X AGP cards and slots. I don't think there were that many AGP video cards that ever maxed out the 4X capability ... PCI Express replaced AGP before 8X was really becoming necessary. If I'm not mistaken the only real issue was with 2X vs 4X AGP because of a change in electrical requirements that could kill the 4X cards.

I was more asking could you use an AGP "8x" card in an AGP 4x lane.....

YES 8X AGP cards will work on 4X agp sockets oops I meant 4X AGP sockets Providing he has a standard atx case and motherboard. Does that answer your question?
There were some old agp 2.0 cards that wont work on a newer agp slot. But all the newer AGP cards will work on the older agp slots because the cards have 2 slot keys or cut outs to fit either agp socket. This is why they have two cut outs on them. The cards should work fine providing the card has 2 key slots and it has the required power. I would suggest the HD 2600 agp It has 128bit memory speed the HD2400 has 64bit memory speed. This makes a huge difference in bandwidth and frame rates. The reason I was asking is because their are some low profile agp sockets on certain motherboards. Also some cases require a low profile card. Then it would require a low profile AGP card. example low profile: Newegg.com - AGP low profile The buyers will need to verify if they have a standard size case before making this purchase.
