How much does divx reduce the space requirements for storage of these huge files
    About 83% - 92%

But you loose some quality as well as multiple languages, wide screen mode, Scene selection, etc.

You also loose the ability to play the divx movie on a set-top box.
(unless you have a gaming console)
      ;)

Things are looking good though, with the MP4 standard and MP4 capable devices hitting the market soon, you can create & view your rips easily. (but still minus scene selection etc)

The only downside is the Divx creators cant afford the very hefty charges for MP4 so they have resorted to spyware in their codec package. Its easily removed, but just not a pleasant thing to put up with.

Quality loss is only dependant on compression. The more you compress, the more quality you loose. Just remember- its not a lossless codec. One way or another- you will loose quality.
