Cam crashes cable modem

Every time I turn on my quite old Logitech Quick Cam Pro (dark brown focus ring) my cable modem stops working after 5 mins and the cable and status lights go off. The cam is in a USB hub with 3 other things which seem unaffected. I tried reinstalling the original drivers from the disk but no change. I'm using Win2000 and this seems to happen using the cam with any software such as Yahoo Messenger etc. This has only started happening recently and I don't think I changed anything.

is the cable modem self powered? i'd go down the lines of usb running outta power
put the modem direct into usb port on pc
