  • Repairing Sapphire HD 4870X2 GFx card

Have one of the above that died due to thermal issues!! It had ingested cat fur and thermal marks are very apparent on the PCB next to the front (output end) GPU and (RAM I think) chip.
Wondering who might have an idea on how to remove and replace these chips. Also where I might I get a replacement chip or chips? From another board or does this RAM chip appear on more recent cards?

I know I have to remove about a zillion small screws to get inside this GFx card and get serials/ID numbers off the chip! Also know that I need access to specialist tools to deal with SMT on the PCB. I will give more detail tomorrow and will post then. But I reckon this card could still flog a lot of recent standard GFx cards even with noisy fan and thermal issues!!!.
    regards

The costs to repair may severely outweigh those to replace it with dual 5770s (which have been known to sell on OCAU for ~$100ea) or even dual 4870s (again on OCAU I've seen these go for ~$50-70ea).
