  • Tweakers Hate #12 - What Now?

    Lets have a look....

    I got a LianLi case....made for the hot Athlons....really good design....what now??
I got a Swiftech 462A...as good as you can get ....what now??
I got 512Mb RAM ...what now??
I got an Athlon XP 2000+....no real performance benefit in apps I run to upgrade...what now??
I got a DVD player and a CD burner...what now??
    I got a 15" tft display..don't need anything better...what now??
    I got a HDD I can't fill in a lifetime of porn downloads..what now??
    I got Linux...MDK9...don't need any better...what Now??
I have converted all office stuff to Open Office...better than MS Office...what now??

I am no real tech junkie or technophile. How in the hell can the tech industry hope to sell newer, bigger, better, faster stuff when what we already have is way past what we NEED....what now???

If you can't fill it, can I borrow it and see if I can?

Does this mean Oldbugger is like totally happy with his PC?

Oh man, I need a Kleenex -- I'm starting to get all teary-eyed and stuff.

        Bless you Oldbugger!

Damn and here's my youngest son jumpin' on my PC now when I'm in the garage and when asked what's wrong with the PC in his room he says, "It's just not as fast Dad".

more ram - max out the board

bigger LCD monitor, 23" Mac with an adapter would be good

            that's for starters

i got more ideas lurking around......

Nah...I'm pretty happy with the setup but its awefully quiet on the "must get" front.....the LCD monitor is the next thing but its not a "must get" at this stage.

When you have a look around at the "second" line stuff, I mean like Athlon XP 1800+ for about $AU130, 256Mb ra for $AU120, good video cards for less than $AU300 etc etc its easy for most people to get a really good performing system together at a reasonable price.....I really wonder how the likes of Intel and AMD are gunna get us to upgrade when what is around now is perfectly adequate for almost anything out there??

I certainly can't see any benefit in upgrading any of the components at the moment......there's no reason too....yet

Ever since the advent of gz chips, I've felt it would be a good idea for chip manufacturers to assist developers trying to develop the next "killer app". Money, equipment, tech resources and such through a partnership or other affiliation. Apps that are of course horsepower intensive. This might be Virtual Reality, 99.5% accurate voice recognition, super-duper video compression/decompression, etc.. This would present a compelling reason to upgrade to the fastest system. It just seems to me that it is in the best interests of these companies to see such developments come to pass in a timely fashion.

I know what you mean, but I like the latest games...so I had to upgrade from my P3 600mhz, but I bought reasonablely priced parts, and I'm going to wait for the GeForceFX and an Athlon 3000+ (333 or 400 mhz FSB) until they are released. Then I'll make me move. (bigger jump in perforance)

In a nutshell, it is called GREED. A lot of power users just have to own the latest and greatest. Whether it be a new processor or the latest in video card technoligies, they just have to own this new gadgetry. And let's not forget the upcoming DDR2 memory. It is getting ready to have its debut in the new NV30 based video cards, so how long before it becomes a viable addition to the motherboard for use as system memory?

Though I am content with my current system, others are not. For these folks, it will be a constant battle to maintain the best of the best as far as components go.

                        I can say Athlon 64. :D

Though one of those will be a long time gettin' here for me. :(

Rumour has it that DDRII is already under testing with the above. ;)

                          HAMMER...there

but what am I gunna run on it that means I must have it???? That's my point......I don't need to run any of my 32 bit apps any faster and what 64bit apps are there anyway??? yet I should add.

I agree with Darth that the technophiles will have to get the latest and greatest but the gap between realistically upgrading for legitimate reasons and what they are trying to sell now is getting huge. My system will cope with anything (that I want to run anyway) for a long long time to come.

This is why M$ is pushing Paladium and the hardware companies are eager to follow....cause if you don't have the new hardware, then you can't run the software and if you don't have the software the hardware won't work properly. Just like at the moment..if you by a M$ mouse then it won't work properly till it can call M$ servers to activate certain parts of the software.

Some how I think our freedom to chose when and what we upgrade is not going to be left totally to us much longer...a lot of it will be dictated to us by multinational companies for purely commercial (theirs) reasons.

Do you thing the recent M$ licensing/activation approach was just by chance.....and that Intel and AMD are building Paladium capabilities into their chips???? They will be able to switch off functionality anytime it suits them (or their revenue streams)...

Wise words Oldbugger, scary but wise.

Throw the RIAA into the mix and the whole "honorable" computing concept and George Orwell's nightmare comes alive right on your desktop.

Not trying to give anyone nightmares now mind you, but it is looking like it is becoming feasible.
Question is, will it be implemented in that manner?

Seems to me the governing bodies of nations can save themselves a lot of legislative effort, by allowing these types of hardware-software locks to be set up.

                            Only time will tell.

when I think about stuff like this, my PIII is looking better all the time :?:
