Hey can you use a 8x apg card in a 4x agp motherboard?

Hey I've been thinking about getting a new video card cause i have a sheety one, (gf4 420mx), at the time dell didn't offer the best card, so i bought the cheapest planning to replace it later. Anyways I've been looking at the 9800 pro, and the 9700 AIW Pro, and maybe the GF-FX, and they're all 8x agp. I know the 9800, and 9700, are both backwards compatible. My motherboard is 1x,2x,4x agp, so my question is, will an 8x agp card still work better than a 4x agp card, on a 4x agp motherboard. And will i get the full potenital from a 8x card on a 4x motherboard.

It should work but, being a Dell ya may likely wind up with a power prob (or lack of).
