Re: Asrock FM2A85X Extreme 6 PCIEe 2.0 x16 only?
All mainstream pci-e 3.0 x16 video cards should run with pci-e 2.0 bandwidth with your motherboard.
With a CrossFireX dual card setup, both video cards would run with x8/x8 lanes using pci-e 2.0 bandwidth.
From the ASRocks online specs for your motherboard:- 3 x PCI Express 2.0 x16 slots (PCIE2/PCIE4: single at x16 (PCIE2) / x8 (PCIE4), or dual at x8 (PCIE2) / x8 (PCIE4) ; PCIE5: x4 mode)
- 2 x PCI Express 2.0 x1 slots
- 2 x PCI slots
A single Nvidia card should work OK, but there is no mention of SLI support for a dual or 3-way SLI setup.
Check the motherboard manual for additional graphics details.
With my older P35 pci-e 1.x system, I get excellent graphics performance with my GTX 460 SLI pci-e 2.0 video cards.Q9650 @ 4.10GHz [9x456MHz]

Re: Asrock FM2A85X Extreme 6 PCIEe 2.0 x16 only?
You're welcome, glad to help out, and I'm not from the government.
In http://forums.tweaktown.com/asrock/5...e-sli-not.html, the OP did not realize that his gaming motherboard's specifications made no mention of Nvidia SLI support and he found out the hard way that SLI was not supported when he bought a second Nvidia card for an SLI setup.
There have been quite a few threads in the ASRock forum about pci-e 3.0 video cards not being recognized in some of the pci-e 3.0 motherboard slots. I think that most of these were with ASRock/Intel motherboards and a majority of the video cards were made by Sapphire. There were many causes, sometimes it was a mobo bios issue, sometimes it was faulty video card and the bottom line is that were many different causes. Sapphire has an excellent reputation. I mention this as a possible warning that you should thoroughly research video cards that are known to work with your motherboard.
Let us know which video card you buy and how it works in your system.Q9650 @ 4.10GHz [9x456MHz]

Think of 2 times crossfire HD 68 or 69 series or single HD 7870 (Tahiti LE)
I have a source for 2 of either 6870's or a pair of 6950's, both sets were running crossfire in Phenom II X2 and X4 systems, respectfully. But I think I'm going try a single Sapphire HD 7870 XT w/ Boost (Tahiti LE or down clocked 7900). I saw a game play going on my neighbor's kids machine, The 7870 XT impressed me. My FM2 system is "supposed to be" a budget box. The MSI 6670 I installed in Dual AMD mode is about as good at games as my old Pentium 4 HP Media Center. I've pushed everything as high as I could stable but it is exactly what I bought it for. It's a great media center type of PC but not for even medium games. I'm not a gamer but I would like to mess around with them occasionally. Anyway thanks for the info, and discussion. The most terrifying words in the English language are: "I'm from the government and I'm here to help."

Re: Asrock FM2A85X Extreme 6 PCIEe 2.0 x16 only?
The Sapphire 7870 should be an excellent video card and your system will run quieter and cooler than either of the older 6870 or 6950 CrossFireX setups. Your new video card is a huge upgrade compared with your former 6670 dual card setup.
Let us know how well your new video card works with your system.
Happy gaming.Q9650 @ 4.10GHz [9x456MHz]
