Seems to be a bit of confussion of late with this question plus a few others so I'll put this up to see if it will help some out. If you can add to it please do. :smokin:
For starters there's this article from a german site, http://www.hardtecs4u.com/reviews/2001/agp4x_e/ (in English), and "Weiter" at the page bottom basically means next for those who don't know, that explains some of the compatibility problems.
Here, http://www.agpforum.org/specs.htm , has a lot of details on AGP specifications though you'll need Acrobat Reader for most of it.
Intel also has some information as well but more technical, http://www.intel.com/technology/agp/index.htm
Ok I hope that I've confused you all that bit more. :D
Note: Super Socket 7 motherboards in some cases won't work with vid cards above TNT2's, GF2's and Voodoo3's due to board design that doesn't allow enough current to reach the AGP slot though there are a few exceptions to this. ;)
Basically though so long as the video card and motherboard have at least one common AGP rating (video card 2x & 4x and motherboard 4x & 8x) then they will both work the common rating/s (in the example this would be 4x). : peace2:
