  • X800GTO2 or 6800GS?

i need to get a new graphics card, and my search is narrowed down to these two cards. i willl go for the PCI-E version either way. in the UK the GTO2 is slightly cheaper, and will unlock, but i wonder whether it would be worth the GS having shader model 3.
    any suggestions?
also, i have no pci-e power connectors on my 400w psu - will this affect me?

Well I am pretty sure that the GTO2 is a faster card, definately if you unlock it. The question of SM 3 is interesting, but I can honestly say the visual difference is not really a huge one, but it is noticeable when compared to SM 2. All new games are using it now however, but I would think its bette rto go with the x800 simply for increased speed. If you think about it, the 6800gs probly isnt fast enough to give you good fps with cranked visuals and SM 3 effecds since it s a slower card, so its advantage of SM 3 may be lost becasue of that.

Also just about all graphics cards come with and adaptor for pci-e power that connects to a normal atx connector.

Absolutely get the 6800GS. Not only is it a better and faster card, it is much more future proof. GTO2's are good cards, but they just do not have the visual quality of the 6800GS. Plus as an added benefit, you can go SLI and run 2 6800GS's and just demolish the GTO2. My cards easily run 500/1250 and I can run benchmarks @ 530/1300. That is up from 425/1000 stock. There is no good reason not to get a 6800GS over the GTO2.

Sorry Mafia Ace, the GTO2 is not faster. It is very comparible, but not faster.

The 7800gs is not unlockable, but the 6800gs is. Get the 6800gs.

Yes it is fast plus has good overclocking potential but even if you read 1 half decent review you'd find that the 7800GS core has no extra pipelines to unlock (its also about time finally that you stopped SHOUTING).

No PCI-E 6800GS or 7800GS even has any hidden pipelines to unlock. It uses a different core than the AGP version. I am not even sure they are building a 7800GS PCI-E. Either way, there are no hidden pipelines to unlock. I have 2 6800GS cards and I checked them and there are no hiden pipes. My cards easily overclock from stock 425/1000 to 500/1250 and are even benchable up to 530/1300 on stock heatsinks!!! They are phenominal overclockers.

                    yeah well.....
the performance on the two cards is supposed to be close anyway, and theres also the issue of the gs being a longer card, and my case is already pretty cramped. gs cost around £30 more than the gto2 and it may be worth it for some but i'l never use SLI, and i think the card is worth it for the money.

EDIT: actually the bit about the length is ballocks, but i have to try and justify myself in some way, dont i?

I've purchased 2 Sapphire GTO2's for other people & also one for myself - all three have come out of the box with 16 pipe's unlocked & will overclock very close to X850XT PE speeds with no additional cooling.

Other than the SM3 question....I think the GTO2 is an outstanding deal

                        well mine was naff...

the pipelines unlocked, but only overclocked to 440mhz core and 570mhz mem.

also, the one i got had no PCI-E power connector. could this be why it overclocks badly? the earlier cards were supposed to be extremely overclockable.

If it is not too late to send it back, do so now. You really should have gotten a 6800GS and it is a far superior card to the X800. The 6800GS is highly underrated and higly overlooked. Anyone that doubts their power, I can easily outscore a single 7800GTX/X1800XT with my 6800GS SLI setup. Best bargain on the planet, hands down. If you think I am wrong, show me scores. I guarantee can beat any and all 7800GTX/X1800's.

no i can't send it back- its already been flashed, overclocked, modded, the rest, and its too old anyway.
im not complaining that much - its quite good, and anyway, why do you push the gs so much? its barely better than a 6800gt, cause of 4 less pipelines, and the clocks have to be aggressive. as well as that, even a x800xl is supposed to pass a stock gt in games, and mine is slightly better than that.
