SM 3.0 vs 2.0b

sorry if this has been posted before but is the much difference between SM 3 and 2.0B

im thinking of buying a X800GTO best value card ive seen and with good over clocking but only SM 3 support the whats nvidia equivalent 6800 ?

In a few engines there are some increasing in image quality, particularly shadowing. In any engine that supports it, there's significant increases in performance.
