  • Benchmark inconsistancies

Not sure where to put this, but I'll slap it here because it turned up with a video benchmark...
I have two systems, and they're pretty much and apples to apples comparison, both AMD/ATI systems...

The first is my older system:
Gigabyte GA-7VXTE mobo (VTXE?) (266 FSB, VIA-something chipset)
    Athlon XP 1700+ (266 fsb)
    Radeon 8500 video (AGP 4x)
    512mb PC2100 RAM
    all WinXP Pro updates updates
    Catalyst 4.8

The second is a system I just built for my g/f's parents
Chaintech 7NJL6 mobo (nForce Ultra 400)
    Athlon XP 2800+ (333fsb)
    Radeon 9550 video (AGP 8x)
    512mb PC3200 Ram
    All WinXP Pro updates
    Catalyst 4.8/upgraded to 4.9

I use AquaMark 3 for most of my benchmarking (personal preference) and the older system benchmarks anywhere from 16,000-18,000, with a GFX score of around 2000-2200.
The newer, faster (in all regards) system is benchmarking around the 14,000 range, with a GFX score of about 1500, it has a faster CPU score, as should be, but I expected at least a 20-25k score, what am I missing? why is an older video card with a slower processor and mobo chipset benching better than the newer/faster system??? went through the new system's BIOS several times, and don't think I've missed anything. catalyst 4.8/4.9 were about the same, not noticeable difference. Any ideas?

    Re: Benchmark inconsistancies

Think I might have found the problem, and I'm kickin myself in the ass big-time... I read almost everything on the video card specs close enough.... It's an Asus 9550 card, and apparantly they make a 64-bit and a 128-bit version, both 128 mb, both 250core/400 mhz memory... guess which one I got?
How much of a performance gain will i get going from 64-bit to 128-bit? double? I hate letting this system out of my grip now that I know it's not right the way i want it to be....

      Re: Benchmark inconsistancies

That could be it... Did you build and install Windows on both computers yourself (ruling out human error here)?

I'd still recommend tossing (sell, return, whatever) the card and going for something better. A 9800 Pro would be the cheapest thing I'd go with, but that's going to be almost $200 U.S.

Yes, built and installed XP on both computers myself (also a 3rd which is my main benching at 44,000 in Aqua3)
Got the new 128-bit card, got 2000 more marks or so, I'd love a better card in it, but it's not for me, and it had a fixed budget, so I got what I could, also, it's gonna be used primarily for surfing and word processing, not much, if any, gaming, just want it to be able to handle a little (it's a home office machine).
