  • 5950 Vs. 9800 Xt

I was wondering on peoples opions on wether the 9800 xt or the 5950 ultra is a better video card to go with?

The 9800 XT currently outperforms the 5950 Ultra, but not by a huge margin, especially on more polygon-intensive games. However, when you get into AA/AF, higher resolutions, and DirectX 9 effects, the XT soars ahead. The Ultra also seems to do better on games like Quake 3...although I doubt you'll really care when it's running at 400 fps.

Really, though, with new cards coming out in a month or two, it's hard to predict who will be on top in the future...

If you want to buy now, though, and have the cash, I'd go with the 9800 XT, especially if you want to play games like Half-Life 2 and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Oblivion Lost. Can't really go wrong with both of them, though.

The 5950 and 9800 are neck to neck, 9800 xt beats it in certain benchs, and 5950 viasa versa. But when AA and AF is on, 9800xt seems to beat the 5950.

However check Anandtech, they did a review of the two cards.

The Nvidia card almost always wins in OpenGL games. It was noticably faster and smoother in Neverwinter Nights (and no that doesn't run at 400fps, more around 40-70) for example.

IQ is pretty comparable, however ATI's AA is better. AF you can't tell the difference.

They are pretty close. I run a 5950 (originally was 5900NU), however I would like to try a 9800XT.
