Is a Geforce 4 ti 4800 better than a FX 5600??

  • Is a Geforce 4 ti 4800 better than a FX 5600??

    Hey guys just wanted your opinion, i bought a geforce fx 5600 but recently got my hands on a free geforce 4 ti 4800. Which is better? Im looking for good performance with Doom 3. Thanks!

    Doom 3 is openGL so you dont need dx9 support. I think the TI4800 would be faster, especially if the 5600 is the non-ultra.

      afaik the 5600 is superior to the 4800. But as for good performance in Doom III, that is yet to be determined. But if I had to guess, the 5600 will be at the medium-low end of Doom III performance food chain.

          The 5600 Ultra may be, but the regular 5600 is NOT better than the TI4800.

            perhaps it was the ultra I was thinking of, but if you already have the 5600 I would just keep it since the majority of games still use dx even if Doom III does not

                I benchmarked both with 3dmark03 and for my 5600 i got 2117 and for the 4800 i got 1673. So i guess ill keep the 5600. What is different about the 5600 ultra compared to the 5600?

                    The Ti4800 is only an 8x AGP Ti 4400 but yes try 3DMark2001SE (build 330 or better).

                      The 5600 supports DX9 so it's gonna score higher than the 4800 on any DX9 test. Run 3DM01 like everyone else said.

                        Yah, 3dMark03 is a pretty biased POS, but how did you get it to run all the test on a Ti4800 (DX8.1)? Anyways, use 3dMark01SE. Even though they have more or less the same performance, the 5600 would be better just because it has newer software versions which will support the complex shading found in newer games like Doom III, not to mention it also has Open GL 2.0 support (yes? I might be wrong there). Try benchmarking so you can get some concrete results : peace2: Mista K6

                          If an average ti4200 beats a fx5600, then how would a ti4800(renamed ti4600) be beat by a fx5600? I picked a ti4800se(renamed ti4400) over a fx5600 and am very glad I did. It performs way better.
                          The ti 4xxx series is not true dx 8.1 like the r8500,r9000/pro, r9100, and r9200 are. The ti 4xxx cards are missing pixel shader 1.4 and have 1.1 instead (nobody noticed anyway). So they are refered to as dx8 by manufacturers for this reason only(confuses everyone). 3dmark 2001 has allowences made just for this series of cards.

                          Where is the current need to run out and get a dx9 card? People think their ti cards won't work with dx9 games. Games that are dx9 have auto adjusting shaders that work just fine with the ti4xxx series, like halo pc for example. Most people have no idea that it has 4 types of shaders, 2.0 for dx9, 1.4 for dx8.1, 1.1 for ti cards and fixed function for dx7 cards. The fixed function one is where any real difference will be noticed. Besides, nvidia has weak support for real world dx9 anyway compared to ati.

                          So my advice is to test both in the real world, play your newest and favorite games with both, then decide. Use something like fraps to see the actual fps. I think you will find the ti card is way faster and looks the same(while playing a dx8.1 game with the fx, it will revert to shader 1.1 since they skipped 1.4 anyway and went straight to 2.0).
                          If you still don't want that ti, sell it to me, for my 2nd rig(in progress).
