DirectX 9 itself doesn't matter what video card you've got. Different games use different generic instructions to interact with your system, which DirectX handles. That's why all controlling devices, all sound and visual devices are in some way handled by DX, and why some video cards and sound cards support higher versions, as they support newer features that have come out.

Do you recommend DX 9 for a GeForce2 MX? (yes is an old one:tears: :o)

[I hope to buy a GF4 Ti4200 (by the middle of the year)]

I wouldnt bother with a Geforce 2 MX, theres no point, might even get worser performance. Get a DirectX 9.0 compliant card when you can afford one.: peace2:

I don't think you're understanding the explanation given by Beefy. DirectX is not just a graphics-only API. It has many components, and installing DirectX9.0a (latest version) will improve many things including sound, online gameplay etc.

Bottom line: Always install the latest official version of DirectX because it's not about graphics performance only.

There are a lot of us out there who are running cards that are only DirectX 7 compliant who are using DX 9. We don't get to see all of the added eye candy that the new DX supplies but it sometimes stablizes and/or improves the options that are possible in some programs.
