  • WARNING: EKWB waterblock for EVGA GTX 680 FTW+ --- Do NOT buy

I just recently purchased one of these waterblocks for my video card and I'm currently fighting EKWB's support as they say NOW they do not support the stock or 3rd party back plates.

This is ridiculous, as there is 2GB of RAM on the back that would be uncooled/unprotected!!

They specifically stated in both of their news releases that they supported the videocard (by model number no less)
At the time of ordering, on their "coolingconfigurator.com" website where you plug in your video card details, it was supported. Now, they list on that configurator that they do not support the backplate and that we need to go and buy screws.

I will let you know the outcome, but as of now they are unwilling to help. they cite: "Due to many disclaimer, terms of use and notifications we publish there is nothing misleading here"

I know I wont ever buy another product from them, that is TERRIBLE support. Ironically all they need to do is ship a few screws that are like 2mm longer... it could fit in an envelope the size of a stamp... It baffles me they do not apologize for the mistake and correct it immediately. The cost to them would be negligible.
I would return it, however it'll cost me minimum $20 shipping and another $15 restocking fee... $35 loss on a $100 product!

I guess I will be sourcing out screws (M3x6 DIN7985) from somewhere! Any suggestions for Canada, preferably Ontario area?

    Thanks
    Syn

A web search using metric screws canada will provide online links.
Local hardware stores should have an assortment.
Motorcycle shops, auto dealer parts departments, Loews, Home Depot or other big box stores might have what you need.

Re: WARNING: EKWB waterblock for EVGA GTX 680 FTW+ --- Do NOT buy

They finally decided to ship me screws via slow mail. Who knows when they will come. They did give me the option of express shiipping for $20... for 10 small screws? that weight nothing? yikes.
      I'll wait for slow mail.

Incidentally I rummaged around my screw stock and found enough to work lol. Not matching and doesn't look pretty, but it'll work for now. So I'll be giving the water block a go this weekend.

      Question of the day...

Why is it easier to find metric screws in the US than in Canada?!?!

I've bought screws before, and never had this much trouble finding locally m3-.5 x 6mm screws. Craaaazy

Finding metric hardware should be easy.
Finding the size you need is a different matter.

          you would think...
a vast majority of the screws here are in inches lol

There isn't much left in canada that is imperial.. but screws are one of them.

Re: WARNING: EKWB waterblock for EVGA GTX 680 FTW+ --- Do NOT buy

Hi everyone, first time posting here after goo-goo-googling for this backplate screw question. I have two evga 680FTW 4Gb models of which I bought EK's full coverage blocks for and was wanting to use the evga backplates. Thanks for the answer on the screws to use, but do I need any thermal pads for the xtra ram chips that the backplate helps keep cool, or is the tolerance close enough to just use some MX-4 on them? And if I need new thermal pads can anyone recommend which one and what thickness to get? Thanks

            TT.

Re: WARNING: EKWB waterblock for EVGA GTX 680 FTW+ --- Do NOT buy

The best way to determine the clearance between the ram chips and the back plate is to buy some modeling clay.
Put a small dab of clay on each ram chip about the size of a grain of rice where the modeling clay is about 1 - 2 mm thick.
Install the back plate and tighten the mounting screws.
Carefully remove the back plate and measure how thick the flattened clay is.
This will tell you how much clearance there is and if thermal pads or tape is needed.
When you are done with this test, be sure to clean the surfaces using 91% pure rubbing alcohol or denatured alcohol.

Let us know what the clearances are.

Thanks for the reply. I sent an email to EK, and he did reply back. But stated he could not give out any information on whether or not any thermal pads, or MX-4 was needed. Guess I'll keep searching for answer. Surely someone knows something about this. I guarrantee you this will be the last time I ever buy an EK product.

                Thanks again.

                  You're welcome.
You could also put TIM on your memory chips, connect the back plate, and remove the back plate to see if you get the expected coverage pattern.
If you're not willing to spend a little time with trial and error, you'll need to see if someone has reported what worked when they have an identical hardware setup.

Let us know what you find out.
