Hello Tweaktown folks!
I was referred here by WTFppl from Reddit. The post could be found here. You guys come highly recommended!
Okay so onto the question.
I am planning building a gaming computer and it is my first build. After a bunch of researching and lots of reading, I have settled on a few things. (although always open to criticism and advice!)
Here is what I currently have.
Budget: Around $2000 max but aiming at something cheaper.
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor HDZ965FBGMBOX
A budget friendly cpu that I would like to OC to hopefully 4.0 Ghz.
MB: MSI 890FXA-GD70 AM3 AMD 890FX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
A kickass motherboard to house the CPU and provide OCing features and the Crossfire mode for the GPUs.
GPU: ASUS EAH5850 DirectCU TOP/2DIS/1GD5 Radeon HD 5850 (Cypress Pro) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card w/ ATI Eyefinity
Two of these puppies in a CF configuration with room to expand later.
CPU Cooler: Scythe SCMG-2100 Sleeve CPU Cooler
At the overclock.net forums, I read that this is one of the better coolers out there and it meets my budget. Newegg gave it great reviews.
Now, I actually have two questions about the motherboard.
1. I would like to house 2 x 4GB 1600 mhz memory sticks in the motherboard. Looking at the MSI website and the online manual for this mobo, the only 4GB stick supported was the Kingston KHX1600C9D3K3/12GX. Triple channel. I was thinking along the lines of G.SKILL Trident+ Turbulence II 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL7D-8GBTDD or G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-8GBRL. Would this motherboard support those? I'm open to suggestions.
2. I've noticed a lot of the memory sticks now come with these heat sink spikes/fins and end up being taller then the normal memory. If I use the Scythe SCMG-2100 Sleeve CPU Cooler, would it block the memory slots? I'm not sure how to measure that. I tried doing a quick dimensions to pixel approximation and so far I've got this: http://imgur.com/Tln9s.jpg , and it looks like one way it might be okay, but I am not sure that is correct.
Looking forward to hearing for you and thanks in advance!
