  • X399 AORUS Extreme - Threadripper 2990wx; memory issues

    Hi,

I have build a computing server based on a Threadripper 2990wx on the x399 AORUS Extreme motherboard. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any recommended memory set around here and thus was left to hope to get a good fit..... which I guess kinda failed.

The memory kit is a F4-3200C14Q2128GTZSW. I know it is for a X99 but looks like this is all that is available... I was hoping to get 14CL at 1.35V but at 2.933GHz with this set.

First attempt was running stock speed, 15CL, 1.2V memtest86. Single CPU, round robin and sequential are doing good. Multi-CPU crashed.
I updated the firmware to F5g and ran again multi-CPU but got the same result.

Stock speed was working single CPU, pushed my luck XMP1 CL14 3.200GHz single CPU. Still good, but multi-CPU crashes again.

Tried to get the memory down to CL14 2.933GHz multi-CPU and got errors before the crash.

Not sure what to think of. I am puzzled. CPU temperature is about 40 degrees; so heatsink is well attached and doing its job. Should I attempt to reseat the CPU?

F4-3200C14Q2-128GTZ is on x399 AORUS Xtreme QVL

If it fail a the same address or near the the same address it may be just one faulty module, try to find it.

    EDIT:
I see the F4-3200C14Q2-128GTZ is only qualified for 4 mudiles but F4-2933C14Q2-128GTZRX is qualified for 8, on G.Skill site too.

Weird, it is not in http://download.gigabyte.us/FileList...treme_250W.pdf...

I removed 4 DIMMs and restarted a CPU only test with mprime (prime95 for Windows users). The CPU didn't crash; temperatures stable at 67 degrees.

I then started a test at 2.133GHz parallel CPUs. Went well for an hour or so. Decided to push it further and added the 4 DIMMs back.
At 2.133GHz, no errors for about an hour again which I never seen. I then went up to 2.933GHz and same result.

I think one of the DIMMs was not inserted properly or some particle fell into the slot when I inserted them.....

Because I like to live on the edge, I am now testing 3.2GHz, 8 DIMMs. Test has been running for almost 15 hours now without errors; 2 passes completed. I will continue testing for 8 passes before declaring this working.

Then I'll fire up mprime blended test for a few days again.

I hope this is for good though. I don't expect those issues when I am not overclocking.....

I was looking at the wrong list :/

Prime95 does not test all memory unless you specifically tells it to do so.

You are overclocking the memory which normally make no significant difference.

Re: X399 AORUS Extreme - Threadripper 2990wx; memory issues

I usr prime to test overall system stability not memory. I use memtest86 for that....

I had to drop down to 2.933GHz since CPU crashed at 3.2GHz on 4th pass. It went straight 4 passes at 2.933GHz but crashed when I initiated another round of tests.....

I realized that when I put the memory clock at 3.2GHz, the system drops the XMP profile and puts it back to 2.1GHz so my initial tests done at 3.2 are bogus. memtest86 doesn't show memory speed.....

I am unsure as if it is the memory speed that causes this. Normally, I would expect memory errors, not system crash. Also, the diagnostic LEDs are showing something weird when the system crashes. It shows what looks like '0b' which is a weird code. I would expect a d as first digit but anything that starts with 0 is undocumented to I am not sure if this is a 0 or a capital d..... 'db' would still be weird (no console found error).

I don't know what to think now.....

Normally changing memory multiplier should not effect the use of XMP.
XMP is just another memory profile that does or does not conform to the standard but essntialy not different from the JEDEC SPD, the timind data is relative to a certain clock and should be scaled up or down when possible to any given multiplier (or clock) e,g timing 15 for multiplier of 24 will be scaled down to 14 for multiplier of 22, and to 16 for multiplier of 25.

I am not familiar with this board setting or overclocking considerations for this CPU, but you are in fact overclocking the memory and there may be other settings that require.
It may help to force the primary timings to those specified to this memory even when the multiplier is lowered down.

Re: X399 AORUS Extreme - Threadripper 2990wx; memory issues

What I meant is that the system won't properly boot with XMP profile 1 and will drop it so it can resume and finish POST. The BIOS shows that it dropped it so setting XMP profile 1 and keeping multiplier to 3.2GHz will make the system behave as if no profile was in use.

The system behaves with XMP profile 1 and 2.933GHz. This gives me CL14 which is what I wanted. I don't know why memtest86 crashes but I ran 5 days or mprime with no crash whatsoever. I am starting to think that there is something memtest86 is doing that the CPU or memory controller doesn't like....
